Hey guys any advice on this rig? Am gonna use a DVD drive and Hard Drive from an old system. Will the PSU be sufficient? Any other issues i should be aware of? This is my first build so any advice appreciated.

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) £33

Abit IP35-E (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £65

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM £160

Akasa AK-ZEN-01-BK Zen Black Case - No PSU £31

OcUK Huntkey 450W PSU £33

Asus GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £70

what will it be used for?

if it's for gaming, then I'd change a few things.

and I have that case, it's quite good, can post pics if you want.

Based on the budget you've spent on the rig above ...

Then clock it to 3ghz +, or do you REALLY need the quad?

A bit more info would be nice..

Very good value indeed! Should overclock ok too. I'd probably swap out the 8600gt for a 1950pro, but either will bowel along ok at 1024x800 or even 1280x1024 with reasonable settings in most games.

My only semi-serious concern is what that PSU is like. I've heard nothing one way or the other about the OcUk own brand power supplies.

I am looking to make it a gaming machine, but at the same time i have a small budget.

The rig i suggested was £400. I cant spend more than that, but think maybe the quad would be more ofa n investment for the future???.

So it depends on whether i get the quad of just a duo, and whether i go GEforce or Nvidia. What ure guys views on those two issues? And whats the difference between the mobo i chose and the one suggested?

Thanks a lot for advice.

go dual core at that budget.

geforce is nvidia, and graphics card wise, go for a 8800GT.

What res you playing at?

do you intend to overclock?

so a dual core 2.66ghz is a better bet? I read another post that said the duo's will be dated pretty soon, although i suppose i could always stick in a quad at a later date.

Graphics wise my mistake, i meant nvidia or Ati. If i save £50 on the processor i could plug it into a better card. Maybe an 8800 or a 2900? Which do you recommend?
and i dont know how to overclock. i wouldnt rule it out if it''ll boost performance and i can do it myself.

So if i lower the processor and raise the graphics card the system seems sound?
Thanks very much for the advice. Any other thoughts greatly appreciated.

PS. i cant find that mobo anywhere. Whats the difference between the one recommended and the one i suggested? seems very little price difference and id rather pay more to have the option of getting a quad later on if the recommended one is not compatible

it's mopre important to have a better gpu than a better cpu.

the best gfx card atm for value for money is deffo the 8800GT.

what is you're budget, I'll spec something for you.

and overclocking is fairly straight forward.

you could go for an E21xx CPU and overclock it. that saves you about £120 on the CPU alone, and with LGA775 you can always stick in a better CPU later.

Definately an 8800GT though

yep that's what I was gonna recomend, got a P35 board too, then upgrade to penryn or something next year.

Mate I was in exactly the same position as you about a month ago. Was gonna go for a Q6600 and the 1950pro, but with the help of the friendly guys on here (especially Yanto :)) I built a rig which was probably twice as good as my original spec. I don't think quad core CPU's are worth it atm because not enough software supports it, and like Skeeter said, because it's an LGA775 socket you could easily just stick a new CPU in it when quad core CPU's start being used more.

E2180's are great and they're great for overclockin as long as you watch the temps and get a half-decent cooler (although you can get it to 3Ghz with the stock cooler as long as you've got some decent airflow). And the 8800gt is a steal for the price at the moment. I can play pretty much every game I know at 1280*1024 on the highest settings (minus antialiasing) and I always get at least 30fps. You really do want to be getting one of these cards because I can see the 1950's becoming outdated in less than half a year.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Yantorsen - budget is £400, dont wanna go over and would like to be under. i know its tight! ive pretty much decided on case, psu, and ram. im gonna salvage hard drive and dvd drive from old system. so that budget is basically for mobo, processor and graphics.

Wots ure recommended spec then?

Cheers guys, overclockers was recommended by a mate, and im not disappointed.

So do you mean you've got £400 to spend on the mobo, cpu, and graphics? Or the whole thing?

I saw that the board that's been specced is mATX as well, this isn't such a bad thing, but you want to make sure that the case will fit a mATX board. And the thing with these mobos is that they have less expansion options (because they're smaller).

Hows this sound? runs in at £430 total. would i need another cooler if i overclock?

That looks fine. Just know that that PSU isn't meant to be one of the quietest ever (according to quite a few people on here). And you shouldn't need another cooler as long as you don't overclock it too much and you've got some decent airflow in the case. You 'should' be able to get it to 3Ghz with the stock cooler, but you need to be watching the temps constantly. I dunno what the airflow's like in a Zen (Yanto should though), but if it's not great then you could go and spend another £15 on a freezer 7 pro. But this is only if you're overclocking and you're having temperature problems. Should be completely fine at stock
