Rats!

Just woke up about an hour ago in my student house to hear a quiet crunching noise, go to the end of my bed and wait and see a rat run out from under my bed and begin to quietly munch on a mars bar that had fallen out of a multipack onto the floor. Freaked me out a bit and I saw it run under my door. Few minutes later I saw it run back under the door towards where a couple more bags of food were in the corner of the room. I started to move about a bit and it turned back round immediately and went out the room.

I've heard them before in the scurting boards scratching away but never seen one before and its freaked me out a bit. What can I do to get rid of them? I dont want to put traps down (not cos its mean or anythin, just dont want to find dead rats in it) and I'm not too sure on rat poison for the same reason.

Hence the reason why I'm up by the way, didnt feel much like sleeping anymore and I've placed shoes against the bottom of the door which I think has covered it up properly.

Anyone else have any problems like this?
 
tip 1 - dont leave food lying on the floor
tip 2 - buy rat traps ( i know you said you dont want to... but its either that or poison them.... then they will die under your floorboards :) smells nice, YUM
tip 3 - contact pest control
tip 4 - buy a cat
tip 5 - dont sleep
tip 6 - buy a cricket bat
 
Speak to your landlord and tell him of the problem, he should be able to deal with it. If you get nowhere with them, then call the council and get them to send to pest/vermin people out.

You need to get pest control in ASAP, where you see one rat theres very likely at least another 10, if not more.

Don't fart around, if you don't do anything it will get out of control in no time at all, rats breed very quickly.
 
My landlord is here at the moment, hes a complete arse though, I reckon he;ll just blame us for it. Also, we're only here for another 3 weeks or so so I reckon he wont do anythin til after we leave.

I'm pretty sure it was a rat, it had a bald tail and it was brown. It was quite small though, easily mouse size, fit under my door easily.
 
Brown and mouse size? That's a mouse you eejit! :p

Rats are darker in colour, usually grey or dark brown and are rat sized, which is bigger than a mouse.
 
dont mice have different tails or somethin though? You can get brown rats as well. I was thinkin I'll buy some poison today and whack that down here and there. Will that be enough? We're at the business end of the year now, i.e. we have exams and 0 loan left so we can't really afford to start payin people to come in and do it professionally.
 
it didnt look much like the mouse though whereas aside from the side it looked a lot like the picture of that brown rat on wiki. I hope I'm wrong though, I hate rats and even though mice are just as much a pest problem, its like grasshoppers and locust.

I dont reckon I'm gonna tell the landlord, we've already done about 30 quids damage which hes gonna charge us 2 grand for so I think I'll get some poison and put that down. If they die in the floorboards then its not our problem, we're leavin within a month or so and theres another house downstairs who I hate so they can deal with it.

I saw the rat/mouse leave under the door twice and come back in under the door once, is that the only way its gonna be gettin into my room cos from what I can see there arent many cracks or anythin they could be squeezin in through although there could be for all I know behind the wardrobe or somethin. I'm gonna start boardin up the gap under my door though.

Can anyone recommend any suitable poisons or any advice on where to put it/ what to put it with or anythin? Greatly appreciate it.
