does anyone have a clue what this could be ?

vectra diesel 95k manual gears

engine running gearbox in neutral , engine sounds fine , press clutch down about 10% of travel rattling noise occurs , keep pressing clutch about 70% more of its total travel still rattling last 20% rattle goes. other than the noise works fine

thanks rang garage said sounds like it will be the mass sumat sumat worn out and may I aswell do bearing and clutch same time.

/sigh

DMF almost certainly, don't put off getting it sorted as it can do more damage. You're probably looking at about £800 for a new clutch and flywheel

As above really! DMF/Clutch/Throwout Bearing are all culprits in this situation and when doing one you may as well do the others.

Assuming you mean a clutch, a dual mass flywheel and a clutch slave cylinder then yes - that actually sounds like a pretty competitive price.

Parts will be upwards of £300 and it's probably a good 6 hours+ work

Is it worth spending over half the value of the car though
? Tbh I have never seen a DMF fail and take out the gearbox they just tend to rattle. Mine was the same and it had nearly 190hp running through it.

The price you have been quoted is not bad I did a few for around £600 a few years back so would be about right now.

I have seen two where DMF's that "Disassembled" while driving blew chunks out of the bell housing.

Both gearboxes remained usable but I can certainly imagine the possibility of unrecoverable damage.

Course it is. He's not going to find another car the same, with a new DMF and clutch for 800 quid is he? So replacement isnt an option - and just because your DMF hasnt failed in that way, it does happen. It more commonly knackers the starter motor which, while not a huge expense, is much more of an inconvenience than a rattle

Cant say I have seen that happen on a Vauxhall DMF or any kind of gearbox fail tbh. Not saying it wont just not seen it.

Most of the ones we had in have some kind of rattle of sorts. If it only rattles at the biting point and it is fine with either the clutch fully depressed or released I would not be overly bothered tbh.

Its up to the op what he does.

yeah in 2 minds get another smaller more economical car with 50k on but its pot luck i have any issues with it or pay £800 and get dmf done and take pot luck again nowt else fails for a few more years.

about a month ago i had the timing belt and pulleys done so leaning more to shelling £800 out.

anyway thanks for you replies and help
