Rattling RX 480

It could be a really loose bearing that's allowing the fan to wobble, if that's the case the rattling is the fan blades rubbing against the shroud.

Sorry, my mistake, I had that recommended to me on another forum when I had a card with coil whine. I don't want to pass on bad advice.

It's cool. It's unlikely to break it outright on the first attempt, but it's certainly not good for the health of the fan motor. Another similar mistake is when cleaning the fans with compressed air (when the gpu is off), you should always hold the fan in place to prevent it spinning too quickly and damaging the motor.

Card is being RMA'd.. it's definitely not clipping any wires and its just the one fan that's making the noise. Swapped the fans round and it just moved the problem to the other side... sounds like it may be a loose bearing after all.

I had the exact same problem with my RX 480 Nitro+ (made a vid of it - never uploaded though). I RMA'd mine approx 3 weeks ago, still waiting for replacement although i'm really torn on switching to the Red Devil.

I have pretty much the same problem. One noisier fan, however it's not as bad as the one in the vid. I would contact them about it but it doesn't bother me much and I enjoy actually having a card :p

Aye, if it was just a wee bit of noise i could probably tolerate it... but as you heard it's a full on rattle.

No idea what the long term effects could be either.. so just sent it back.

You did the best thing. I could never determine if the noise in mine was from something inside vibrating against the heatsink or if the ball bearings in the fans were 'shot'. Either way it was impossible to ignore so i just sent it back.

I thought one of the selling points of the Nitro was the ability to RMA just the fan for just such an instance.

Granted, you shouldn't (wouldn't) expect it from a new device but surely easier to RMA the fan to see if that rectifies the problem then RMA the entire unit is the fan rattle wasn't resolved.

Tried that.. a new fan would fix the problem entirely going by afew tests that i did. However OCUK said it wasn't possible for them to do that since they don't stock the part.

Sapphire basically just told me to go back to the retailer for my warranty.

Will give it afew days to see how stock is flowing... if not i'll maybe switch to another card completely.

In my case it was difficult to tell if it was the fan or not. It's a pularva to RMA the fans, get a replacement, potentially find out it's not the fans, have to RMA the card, wait for a replacement. It just seems easier to RMA the card with OCUK and get a replacement. Of course maybe it was the fans but i suspect i'd have to RMA those to Sapphire (unsure on that) and that could take just as much time to just RMA the card. I didn't know then i'd be waiting 3+ weeks.
