Went out in my mates Ratted Splitty yesterday and took a few shots.
Thought i would share them as it is sheer class. At 43 years old it still scooted us about great and gets more attention and laughs than anything else i have ever been in.

Now that is an Original bus. :cool:
 
I like it!

Although perhaps more dilapidated than rat-look... :D

Are there any holes in the floor in the van? I'd be disappointed if not...

It's more the mechanicals that have to be in good shape. The interior can be whatever you want it to be - rat look would work best with the interior imo.

Anyway, uber van! :cool:
 
Is that even road-legal anymore :eek: ...and forgive my ignorance but what's 'RAT' ? ...apart from a small furry mammal, which I'm assuming you aren't talking about here.
 
rat look = wearing rust + scars with pride. but having exceptional mechanics usually, often this is coupled with a nice interior,

Basically - 'original' paint and patina, perfect mechanicals and nice shiny wheels = rat 'look' for me.

Arhh I see, my mate had a MK1 Fiesta about 4 years ago that pretty well satisfied the credentials for the 'RAT' look :p ...it was 22 years old when he had it. Only reason it was scraped is because it got broken into and someone tried to force the steering lock (if indeed it even had one) long story short, they broke the steering column so the wheel just turned freely on it's own. Wasn’t really worth repairing as they’d broken every window too and it’d all cost more than the car was worth.

They cost virtually nothing to maintain!

Its only pre 60 buses that are getting expensive on parts (although most peeps swap out for later parts).

I had real trouble getting new rear brake shoes for my 62 split. I just took the shoes down to International Friction Linings, then stripped them, hammerited the carriers, put new friction lining on with the correct tollerance, and riveted them to the carrier as well as bonding them!

These came back looking brand new for £12.50 for the a pair (so £25 in total for the rear brakes). *** rear shoes would have cost me £70 if i'd found any!

Apart from that (parts hard to get or find) everything is cheap cheap cheap. EG, original *** front or rear damper £18!!! Rear brake cylinders £12....thats not expensive. I've just upgraded my brakes from single circuit (scary) to dual circuit for less than £100! I'm loving it...cant wait to get her back fromt he sprayers now!

Now back OT....nice ratty! What lump is it running!? 1600tp?
