Ray Maguire talks about the PS3s UK price difference on Sonys semi-official blog

I wouldn't call the answers in depth, maybe lengthly but they actualy say very little.
It's mostly just poor excuses, he talks about how if the currency exchange was 1.4 dollars to the pound (as it was not too long ago) then the price wouldn't seem bad at all. The dollar to pound ratio has been up around 1.8 for about two years now iirc, it's currently at 1.96, it's been a very long time since it was 1.4

Yes you should add sales tax the the US price, in Florida the sales tax is 9%, if I went in to a store I'd have to pay $42 ontop of the $599 for a 60gig model, thats still only about £327. I could actually order online from some companies that are out of state and pay no sales tax, making it over £100 cheaper, which is a big saving. You can't tell me additional costs in the UK are that much higher. It's not like they have the often expensive costs of a worldwide launch where they may have to airfrieght consoles in. They've had plenty of time thanks to the delay so all the consoles will be going by container ship.

Sony can't take all the blame though, I bet the UK shops are demanding their share of profit per console.

Shops are making about £18 on the console after they factor in shipping, staff wages and other costs.

That is one of the reasons why quite a few retailers are forcing bundles (the money always has and always will be in the games and accesories) to try and get some margin on the package

Take a look around, Pre order prices are well above and beyond what the official price has been put at.

Don't post any links here, Just look around. I've seen some going for nearly £600 and thats from a well known online retailer.

thats gotta be rubbish though id bet most retailers would accept to break even on ps3's at launch just becaues it will be so en vogue to have one and to be seen with them. Lets not forget a console is just a base to sell the games and accessories at silly prices.
