Hi Guys/Girls,

Anyone know the release date of the Razer Megalodon

Im looking for a set of SurroundSound headphones to replace my Razer Barracudas that died a death today.....They are around two years old so i can afford to spend around £130.

The thing that attracted me to the Megalodon is the fact that they connect via USB and dont require a soundcard, apprently everything is built into the control console...Could any validate this ?

Thanks in advance for the assistance !

Considering these were announced back in August they are taking their time.

Only information on release is on Razer's site which says Quarter 1 - 2009.

Hi Pred,

Thanks for your reply..

Can anyone validate the Internal 7.1 Soundcard question and/or suggest a good alternative for around 100-130 quid ?

Thanks in advance...

Think your question has been pretty much answered by the other thread. Set of well rated headphones, and a clip on mic (so it doesnt pick up everything) will do what you want, and potentially sound far better.

But you haven't heard these ones - no-one has. They could be brilliant. They could just be a pair of high quality binaural headphones with the supposedly fabulous Dolby Headphone 7.1 sound, which is what you're advocating all the time in the other thread.

Surely you have to try something before passing judgement on it?

Before you get all personal we were actually talking about a range of technologies, rather than just Dolby Headphone, such as AVR acoustic surround, Dolby Headphone, CMSS etc which you seem to have not even heard of til yesterday, so I don't think you're in a ripe comment to position regards the effectiveness of these; not to mention given the track rating and even your own admissions on sound quality in general on these headsets, what I said still stands.
As Mansize points out I said potential; but then given this sort of market for l337 gamers, I have only small reason to doubt this is not the case.

If these sound better than an equivalent set of sennheisers or other headphones then I will eat my face.

Maybe if they concentrated on quality rather than trying to make them look fancy, sound special with marketing and supposed gimmicky technologies, then they might hold more stead in my eyes.

But in my eyes they are nothing more than the gaming version of BOSE when it comes to speakers and headsets.

I would stay away from anything USB.

To comapre the USB MedUSA's are rubbish (very tinny), while the normal cabled ones sound far better.

Considering how bad the normal cabled ones sounded to me I dread to think how bad the USB version must be.

Dolby Headphone is 5.1 only and they won't be better, 5.1 headsets are rubbish so 7.1 isn't gonna be better.

I mean even with a 5.1 headset it's not actually all that clear where the sounds are coming from, if you set the Medusa at equal sound levels then you can barely distinguish the sound, sure you can up the rears but it's still inferior to stereo headphones with the right effects turned on. Having that amount of speakers built into a headset is just ridiculous and only appeals to the mainstream who will buy them and of course think they are getting a good deal.

A lot of people on these forums have bought the headsets and thought they were good, but a lot saw the light and got a decent set of headphones rather than put up with the false marketing surrounded around 5.1 headsets.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies - I was extremley pleased with the result of my Razer Barracuda's. They are, by far, a lot better sounding than a generic set of headphones (Then again for 80 quid they ought to be). This said, i have never tried a set of Sennheisers and am getting increasingly more interested.

Other than the Gaming Grade 350's (That seem to have VERY mixed reviews) can you suggest another pair - Id be very interested in trying a pair of these out prior to purchase. I struggle to think how only two speakers/drivers can offer the "surround" sound I am looking for - But i understand that all of sound goes to the same place, so again dont understand completley how a multi speaker (Like the Barracuda) works also

Thanks for the help thus far !

Don't try and worry about the technicalitites, just worry about the sound quality. These headphone manufacturers have been around for many many years, and over that time have produced many great headphones.

These mousemat manufacturers are using cheap drivers, cheap plastics, and are making out their 5.1 headsets are gods greatest gift to gamers. But honestly nothing will immerse you as much as a decent set of stereo headphones. Ive auditioned a number of headsets and none can get close to a decent set of headphones.

Ignore the senn 350 headset, look at their headphones and get yourself a clip on elara mic for gaming use. The senn HD595 are very very good and within budget, and I would buy them blind if I were you. I know you would like to hear them first, but if you heard a brand new pair then you might not be bowled over as most headphones need a 100+ hours to run in properly and for their sound to open up.

I cannot stress enough that if you think the headset you had was amazing, then your heart will skip many a beat when you get used to your own pair of headphones. Then you will look back and think why didn't I buy these sooner :D

Hi Ad,

Im nearly convinced these are my new Headphones - I just spoke to my local Hi-Fi/Audio shop, they were not very helpful. However, thus said they suggested the SennHeiser RS130 - Anyone had any experience ?

I presume the SH HD595 will work fine with my X-FI Xtreme Music - It has the CMSS function and i presume this is what gives me the surround sound ?

Thanks for help thus far - I need only the smallest amount of pursuading now guys, keep it up (Much to my wifes distress)

O god they certainly are a bunch of muppets if they recommend a pair of wireless phones. Wireless phones can intertere with cordless phones and are subjet to interference themselves. It's best to stick with wired senns as they will sound better.

They should sound fine with your X-fi, and can just be plugged into the socket normally used for front speaker L/R, probably a green socket. But I think you might need an adapter as the senn will probably be terminated with a 1/4 inch jac whereas a soundcard uses 3.5mm jack. Just search 1/4 to 3.5mm on ebay or get one from a local electronics shop, should cost no more than a few pounds. Once connected just play around with CMSS on and off to see which sounds better for you, but yes they will work fine together.

Let your wife know that with your nice new headphones you will be out of her hair and nice and quiet :D

Afternoon All,

I finally took the plunge after much advice from Ad and the rest of you (Thanks) and purchased a pair of Sennhesier HD595, Got them for what i think is a good price also £99.99 !!!

They should be delivered over the next few days - When they do i shall report back with my findings !!

Thanks again for all your help !!

-Vinny-

Nice one vinny, you will enjoy them.

But I would advise that when you are not at your pc then play music through the headphones for a few weeks, even off the pc, cd player, or portable device. This is to loosen them up and let the drivers bed in, and as such the sound will change over the course of a few 100 hours, but most noticably in the first 50 or so.

Don't be disheartened if they sound a little off when you first plug them in, you will be rewarded once they are run in :D

But really what you want is on of these.

Agree with everything -AD- said!!

Thank god you went for the HD595. 5.1 is generally a fad. i still Don't understand the logic behind it. how can you have 5.1 from two sets of speakers on your head?
