I have been looking for a way to rewrite the default hardware colour/effect pre-set. I am not much of a rbg unicorn puke person? I have found an open source controller but you still need it installed and running in the background. Is it yet possible to rewrite the onboard memory to change the default profile?

Might depend on the keyboard. Some have on-board memory, while others do not.

Logitech G910 Orion Spectrum, which has a breathe/wave rainbow puke by default. The keyboard does have 3 MR buttons but I don't think there is onboard memory as they only seem to work with the Logitech G HUB running in the system tray.
Some of the older Logitech keyboards had/have a "brightness key + 1/2/3/4" to rotate through a few pre-set modes doesn't seem to work here.
