Hi guys,

Really quick question... Would any 40Mhz RC controller/transmitter work with any 40 Mhz RC car?

I've broken my one (the stearing bit) and want to get another controller before I pass the car on.

Cheers,

Mal

Yes, but if its a different brand, you "might" have to use a different brand of crystals (most recievers take any brand, but transmitters can be fussy).

What are the two brands out of interest?

Yep what paradigm said. If you can try to get a new Tx of the same brand as the broken one, you're sure to be fine.

Other brands should work, but sometimes the crystals just won't have any of it. Maybe take the car into a shop and ask to give it a quick test before you buy it.

Same brand for same brand. Different companies use different signals for thier different channels. IE, Toshiba will use throttle as the first in the signal output, another make will use steering first, and a third company will intermix the two.

Kind of like trying to use Mac software on a PC. Different formats between manufacturers.

If you get the same manufacturer for your new one, you will NEED to move your crystal over to the new one otherwise the transmitter and receiver will be on different frequencies.

You can definately mix brands with no bother. Main thing to look out for is that some cheaper kit will be AM whereas more expensive stuff uses FM. You'll need to make sure that you get a transmitters that'sd compatible with the receiver.

What sort of car and kit are we talking about here anyway? Most people who have basic starter kit have 27Mhz stuff, 40 Mhz tends to be higher end stuff used by racers and the like.

Usually its not on the actual circuit board, it slots into a hole in the controller. The crystal is a small 2 pinned metal oblong usually with a tab of plastic attached to it so you can get it out. Although that depends on whether the controller is a cheap and chearful one or a proper model one.

Edit, just took a couple of photos:

The crystal should look pretty much exactly the same but the position on the controller depends on the design, one of my other ones is on the front uncovered and another on the back in the battery section similar to the one above.
