RC Helicopter for a kid

Hey guys,

My lad is 8 next week and has shown interest in an rc helicopter but I have no clue about them. There are threads on the forums about them but they are the more expensive enthusiast models. I'm after one that is well made (as he is going to inevitably crash it a lot) and preferably one that can shoot missles. I've seen there are quite a few Syma gyroscopes on amazon which look really good and very affordable, are they a good place to start for a child?

The ones that are high rated unfortunately don't fire missles, would I be better off forgetting that or are there good models out there that can shoot and are well made?

Thanks

Forget the helicopter and get a quad copter. Something like a hubsan 107. Very robust, survives lots of crashes, replacement parts are dirt cheap and plentiful. My seven year old loves his wee hubsan

Ethos quad will be good rtf kit is around 60 and you can get a camera attachment, missile launcher think about 6 missiles a water gun and a bubble machine attachments about 20 quid each the camera isn't fpv tho

Thanks for the replies. He's set on having a 'normal' helicopter. The ethos does look good but it's a bit out my price range.

I'm drawn to either the Red5 one that shoots missles or water (can't find that much info on these but seem to get good reviews) http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9145399.htm or the syma which are obviously well known.. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Syma-Edition-Version-Indoor-Helicopter/dp/B00BFSF66O do you think the symas will be superior?

I'm looking at buying 2 so a friend can join in at the same time, buying 2 symas with spares adds up to just over £40 or I can buy 2 red5's for just under £50 (they come with spares already). I can't seem to find any others that fire missles that have half decent ratings.

Talk him into a Quad then, as somebody who has brought many rc helicopters in the sub £50 zone I can't tell you how much more fun the hubsan for £25 has been :)

My little Hubsan is one of the best toys I've ever bought. As mentioned parts are first cheap. You can get one with a camera which records to a MicroSd for £32 iirc, but a word of warning: the motors, crash bumper and battery from the non camera model will NOT fit. The batteries will but they are considerably smaller. If you go for the camera model, make sure you get the right spares.

And props. Lots of props :p

Dont buy a cheapo heli as it wont fly (well for long) and parts will be either none existant or about as much as the heli lol.

I would go for a E-flite Blade CX2 RTF. All you need to get going in the box and parts are easily obtainable. Cant really go wrong with the E-flite range.

Please dont buy those Argos heli's you really will be just wasting your money.

Thanks for all the advice. I went for 2 symas with extra part packs for both. If he really gets into it then i'll be asking again for upgrade options at xmas :)

Another vote for Hubsan x4. Though its hardly a 'toy' I imagine the average 8 year old would have the props smashed in minutes.

It can also go quite high (and far) - far enough so you can't see it anyway

I've got a Syma S107G - its fantastic :)
15 min battery life or so, though unfortunately runs on infra red, so you cant use it in sunlight.

Perfect indoors though!

This. My 6yr old son started off with one of these and nows he's moved onto a Blade MSR. The Syma is a perfect "my first helicopter".

I had an urge recently to play with RC helicopters and the like and I have one winging it's way to me as we speak courtesy of a generous guy on another forum. This will be a very basic model but will at least tell me if this is not yet another passing fancy.

If not then I have also a chance to buy a Hubsan with a bunch of extras.
