Hi all,

At my mates house he has an RCD socket on the wall which is connected to an outdoor socket. Is it possible to connect a standard extension lead into this RCD socket so that he can also use it to power some other things indoors?

This is what it looks like:

Thanks :)

Is the outside socket connected via that plug, or a spur?
If the outside socket is connect via that plug than anything else plugged in would be protected the same way.

Reading the information on the face plate suggests that the socket itself is protected, but I can't find specific information for that model, MK have a technical helpline 01268 563720 and I suspect would be able to give a definitive answer.

Thanks for the response. The outdoor sockets are connected directly via that plug.

Does that mean if he plugs in an extension lead with on/off switches for each individual socket he can just leave the RCD socket on? And as you have mentioned the whole extension lead will then be protected instead?

Cheers :)

Thats correct.

He should make sure he tests that RCD socket, it is getting on a bit now (late 80s - early 90s)

Is it the label on the bottom right corner that prompted the thread ?

Ok well that's good news at least. Saves having to put another socket in for now.

I think the main concern was how an RCD socket would work with an extension lead.

I.e. Having the outdoor equipment (pond pump, lawnmowers etc) connected directly into an extension lead with other equipment, and then all of this connected into the RCD socket.

Thanks :)

The socket is providing 30ma residual current protection for anything plug into the socket.

As stated previously, just use the test button to see if it's tripping correctly, they do have a tendancy to fail, and that is a pretty old model.
