RDC stops working after removing Domain Controller role

We've got a basic fileserver at work with RDS service running on it for people to administer the server from home, which was working fine until we tested out using it as a full domain controller. After removing the domain controller role, all the local users were removed, and Terminal Services no longer allows external connections (LAN connections are fine).

The error given when trying to log on externally is: "The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remove connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection."

The server is running Standard Server 2003 Edition and is also configured to run as a DHCP, DNS and WINS server, all of which function properly.

I'm not used to this lark, but I'm the only technically minded person in work this week. My bet is that it's a user issue, since all local users have been removed on removal of the Domain Controller role.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this working?

Cheers
