RDR is the most frustrating game I've ever played

I bought this game the other day after hearing about how good it is from a few mates. It's been nothing but irritating glitches after glitches interspersed with clunky gameplay and godawful mechanics. I decided to have a look at some reviews for it, and I'm incredulous at IGN's one in particular, scoring a 9.8 and not a single mention of the myriad of bugs or annoyances at all. It's just the writer (who was probably paid by Rockstar) masturbating to the game.

Just in the last two hours;
- saved a hooker from being stabbed, got 50 honor for it but the sheriff decided to shoot me immediately afterwards by surprise, killing me
- approached a woman on the roadside who was friendly, then immediately got shot and killed by 4 bandits who teleported in
- my horse rode off a cliff and died when I whistled it, which meant I had to run for about five minutes to the nearest town
- killed a coyote for its pelt next to a stranger (quest npc) who then ran off in fear, which then provoked two other people passing by on horseback to shoot and kill me out of nowhere without warning (this happened twice actually, second time I had the chance to fight back and defending myself ended up in getting a Wanted level... yeah great design there!)
- tried to lock on with deadeye onto some bandits shooting in Armadillo and ended up locking onto the hooker next to me and killing her without being able to cancel it, which made the lawmen and bystanders shoot and kill me without giving me a chance to run away or fight back
- aimed at an eagle in the sky while doing American Appetites quest, only for the quest to fail because the quest npc nearby didn't like it for some reason (I didn't even shoot!)

I just couldn't enjoy the game at all. Just when it looked like I was enjoying it, some game-wrecking incident happens which ends up in the screen either saying 'FAILED' or 'DEAD' without giving me a chance to do something about it. It's like they tried so hard to get the worst aspects of GTA4 and condensed it into a hateful little package and slapped a £40 tag on it.

What made you guys like it? I'm curious. I bought it for £20 pre-owned but I'm seriously regretting it.

I know it's a setup, you guys seemed to have missed the bit where I said they teleported in, as opposed to simply hiding then moving into view. Normally when that happens you are given some leeway into getting the hell out of there then fighting back.

It says a hell of a lot about the state of the game that you could only quibble with that one particular point, and only with half of that sentence before selectively ignoring the actual bug and going 'it's a setup durr!!'

I agree with all your points, great cutscenes, voice acting, but crap game play, the usual stuff from Cockstar

I'm not that far into it myself, but haven't really come across any major bugs like that.

I'm aware it was quite glitchy on release, but my understanding is that subsequent updates fixed most of that.

When my horse died I would just wait a while and whistle for a new one.

And I think you just didn't see the bandits hiding.;)

I honestly didn't find the game glitchy at all. And If I did encounter one, I can't remember it happening so it can't have been that bad.

What was the full sentence? I read it as bullet points.

I never experienced any of those bugs, that's not to say they aren't there though. The horse whistling thing, you have an unlimited amount of horses so if one dies just wait about 10 seconds and whistle again, another will come. The thing I hated most about this game was the fact it took forever to get anywhere and on a map twice the size of San Andreas (supposedly) that isn't very good. Sure you can take Stagecoaches or set up a camp and teleport but it's too clunky, not accessable enough, it wouldn't be so bad if there was at least something to listen to when you're riding around instead of an occasional interlude.

I loved it - thought any 'bugs' were very minor when compared to the story and quality of voice acting (mainly Marston of course). In fact my only real gripe was the voice acting of the Native American guy (can't remember his name - it seemed sooo bad compared to all the other characters!

If you were in the middle of a town IRL and shot an animal then pulled out a knife and started skinning it I think it would get the attention of passers by

This was by the person with the dousing rod (so in the middle of nowhere basically) who wants you to convince a man who owns water-rich land to sell it to you.

Those were just examples, it's happened quite a lot. It's a pain that I'm always having to find out by trial and error if I should unholster my gun or not. If I approach somebody in the wilderness, I either run the risk of dying because I didn't unholster my gun in time, or I risk dying because I unholstered my gun and ****ed a nearby traveller off for no reason and get killed for it.

Now I just ignore random tasks (blue dots on the radar basically) and keep on riding. Bloke stabbing a woman in the face in town? Good on him. Woman needs help with her carriage? Tough ****. Dude wants me to pick some flowers for him? Ha he can do and do it himself. I can't be bothered to play the 'will they or won't they shoot me for no reason' lottery. Side-quests are completely out of the question because of how poorly the interaction between Marston and strangers are implemented.

I can't even do the challenges section of the menu in abject fear of it clashing with another mechanic ingame. Getting coyote pelts is about as dangerous as walking into a town full of ornery bandits and insulting their mothers.

This game also REALLY need a 'safety' mode - that is, so the Dead Eye mode won't lock onto people that aren't hostile to you. I can't fight bandits in towns because it just keeps locking onto some hapless poor soul who only wanted a drink.

Just dont be so trigger happy :p. Ive not had any issues like youve described and never ignored any random task. For example the hooker one, just dont kill the perp (probably why you lost honor (sic)), especially not in a town, main him and tie him up...

What you are complaining about sounds exactly like how a lone Cowboy would have to act in the middle of nowhere or how a person would behave if a stranger takes a gun out and start shooting at something.

ps3ud0

You want complain about glitches & bugs (I don't blame you) try Fallout New Vegas :(

How any reviewer can give a game so broken more than 3/10 is beyond belief, but unfortunately that's what we get when the developer still get praised by reviewers and ultimately the gamers put up with it...

Brought it on release, got to mexico & then turned it off. Bored to me to death to be honest. Online was poop too, it has all been added through DLC it seems.

Hoarding the horses annoyed me so much most tedious thing ever!

Voice acting was great but that's probably the only decent thing going for it.

on xbox360 version, my mate has been trying to do the '#shoot 2 hats off in 5 seconds' thang.

now i timed him as he was doing it. he did it on multiple occasions with either a signle bullet on 2 targets lined up. or individually on CPU characters AND human players...

anyone had issues with this?

aye totally agree, absolutely hated this game, still can't believe all those reviews being so high, it's bugged to the high heaven, glitchy, clunky control system, boring missions/story, all in all a pretty rubbish game.
