Thread may contain spoilers.

I know RDR just came out yesterday but I'm pretty sure by now everyone has sunk in a good 50-60 hours into it.

What are everyones first impressions on GTA in the west?

My first impressions on RDR compared to GTA4.

Characters aren't quite as entertaining as GTA4's.
Combat/cover still isn't what you'd expect from a 3rd person shooter in 2010 but much more polished than GTA4.. which is to be expected.
Story so far doesn't seem as gripping as GTA4's.. but I have only really just started.
Missions are more fun and varied.

What are everyone else's thoughts?

I've only put ~two hours into it so far, so I'm not really in a position to judge. But all the same, I'm enjoying it immensely. :D

I actually have to round cattle up in real life, so the fact I enjoy doing it in a game means that Rockstar must have done something right. ;)

GTA IV was crap, RDR is not crap. :)

Plus the framerate isn't awful, I still don't know how they let GTA IV get to mass production in that state. Yeah a lot of people say they don't notice it but they are blind or have never played a 60 FPS game in their life.

One of the biggest problems with GTA IV was that you didn't have much to do on the side, totally different story with this game.

I must say I am disappointed with GTA4, I could waste hours on San Andreas, but get bored much more quickly on 4

im interested to hear some more opinions on this as i really didnt enjoy GTA4, i think it was more to do with all the stupid side things like phone calls/dates etc... but somthing was just missing.

at first i thought it was just because id grown out of the drive around shoot people for no reason side of the game but Saints Row 2 showed me this isnt the case and IMO was a better game.

more to the point is i like the style of RDR but i think for now i will hold off until its cheaper then release price.

You can pick it up for around £28 or £15 at game if you trade in another game for it... "GOW3, ff13 for example."

Don't wait, buy it now.

meta critic disagrees. :D

and a lot of fans of Vice City and San Andreas would agree. ;)

GTA IV didn't have much going for it, big open area, decent characters, great voice acting, great lip syncing are pretty much the only good points.

It also had; tedious missions, poor shooting and cover mechanics, hardly any fun stuff on the side, a some what empty world, crappy sound effects for weapons, driving was pretty **** and not as fun/whacky as past GTA games, motorcycles were practically useless until TLAD, ass framerate and that incredibly dull 'dating' and 'social' mechanic between 'friends'.

and I'm just thinking from the top of my head! GTA IV is the only 3D GTA game I never bothered completing (I got right to the end I believe then cba'd)

Even Chinatown Wars is more fun than IV.

Edit: If RDR is anything to go by the next GTA should be a lot better. I sat playing Poker for an hour last night. :o :p

Also I understand that now GTA IV has some more fun little bits added to it due to the extra things you can do from the DLC, but on release it was extremely dull once the initial buzz wore off.

Well, GTA4 was the first GTA game and open world game that I actually completed. Played every single GTA game and remember playing the demo of GTA on the PS1.

I really loved everything about GTA4.

I was a massive GTA fan but IV just seemed so basic, a step forward in so many ways but they missed one of the most important things; content.

It's probably the biggest disappointment I've had in a video game. Just didn't even come close to the joys of playing through Vice City for the first time.

Too early to judge, but so far I'm finding RDR really varied and fun.

GTA 4 was the only GTA game I've not bothered to complete. I got as far as the last island, but was just fed up of it. Initially when I first played it, it did feel amazing, due to the scale of the world and the attention to detail, that wore off pretty quickly though.

The missions all seemed to be the same and it was annoying when you got tough long ones that there is no checkpoints where it saves it at critical points. RDR does save during missions.

The social aspect of the game with friends and girlfriends was poorly conceived and just became a total annoyance when you got a call every 2 minutes asking you to go bowling.

RDR so far has been fun, that really is what GTA 4 lacked, they went for a more serious tone with the game and really lost a lot of what was good about Vice City and San Andreas.... silly challenges... riding a bmx off the top a mountain and opening a parachute, escaping from Area 51 on a jetpack. It was ridiculous, but it was fun.

Only My opinion !!!

GTA4 to me looked washed out so i just couldn't lose myself in the World. :(
I also Hate that whole Yanky Gangster crap so it just didn't work for me, On top of that driving the cars sucked the big one.

RDR looks Awesome & sets the right Atmoshpere from the second it starts up, It plays better & you feel more in touch with your Char, Duels are kin Awesome with slow mo that gives me goose bumps when I drop a Dude, Shooting people off horses as they steam towards you is Unbelievable awesome with the guys rag dolling all over the place, Damn it the game nigh on gives me Wood when i play it. + :o + :p

I need more time to give a Proper review as I have only just touched the surface, Mind you though the Surface is Platinum.

GTA4 was really dull, I never made it off the first Island, IMO the series died after Vice City, SA and GTA4 where such a chore to play.

RDR seems pretty interesting so far, it's a bit different obviously being more of a slow burner but I've not played it enough to say anymore other than the engine and graphics are much improved.
