I've got my new thermal paste, Arctic Silver 5, and want to replace the current compound on my MSI graphics card.

Does anyone have a guide or provide assistance? Someone mentioned applying the paste in a star shape, but I've not heard anything further.

Cheers :)

When applying pressure to the core to refit the heatsink, it says use a coffee filter. I don't have one, what would be a good alternative?

something that doesnt damage it or leave residue behind like fiber from paper and such, it's not that important to use cofe filters xD

AS5 is conductive, be careful.

I would hate to fry my card, so what about the MX range? I have some left from doing my H100i! Not sure what state its in mind!

EDIT - Tell a lie, its CoolerMaster E2 IC Essential.

I've had great success with MX4. Some people recommend a pea size some do a line and some do a cross. I tend to do a straight line across the middle and always have had good temps.

Sometimes i use a drop in the middle, sometimes i use a thin line and sometimes i cover the whole core to give it a thin even coating. I think for a gpu the last option makes the most sense. For a cpu i think a small blob or a thin line makes more sense.

Blob in the middle and let the pressure spread it, that way air gets pushed outwards instead of being trapped in pockets (spread method).

I use MX-4 and IC diamond 7/24. Both great but the former much easier to work with. Blob in the middle always works. Size of a pea and spreads over the core with pressure when fitting the cooler. Never tighten GPU cores hard. Finger tight.

Thanks for your replies guys.

Still need confirmation on the use of the E2 and the likely hood of shorting My GPU using the AS5!

Another question....does anyone know how OcUK deal with warranty if GPU coolers have been removed? MSI in particular.

So I went for it and used the Arctic Silver 5. Process was indeed easy despite some spillage when removing the old solid stock paste. Graphics card has been running fine, here is before & after!
