The other day, I browsing in a very well known high street pc retailers.

Now, I know your not supposed to put prices from other shops on these threads. However I feel its ok in this instance, because, beleive it or not I really dont think your going to go there instead.

Now, here at OcUK you can get an AMD X2 3800+ (retail) for about £105.
Now, if your stupid, you can go to the other place and pay... wait for it...
£220! I mean, there should be laws against this blatant rip off....

But then, I guess they dont want to flog stock at less than the price they paid.

ha ha ha... shame some suckers going to suffer though.

Yeah, it was like the time I went into one of these stores for a USB printer cable. They wanted £15 for one :|

Went into ocuk and they were selling the same cable for £2.

Anyway, back on topic, as said they probably just haven't changed the price to match them after the price drop.

 where in the world, would ask £15 for a usb cable

.. err dont answer that.

I alwasy seem to wind up playing devils advocate here but anyway...

these guys work on difference purchasing arrangements, I can't imagine the buyers will be expecting to sell the stock at these prices, they'll most likely be sitting on them until they get some sort of a buyback or price adjustment from amd. Also, they won't sell anywhere near the amount of these things that ocuk do (not cables, they they are a blatent rip off if you buy them but they're mainly given away so the inflated price is just to make the deal look better which is a standard sales technique).

Seriously though, if there are 200 stores (think there are less, can't remember but yes, I did used to work there :o ) with 2 in stock each thats 400.

This is not core business to them, 400 would take them weeks and weeks to shift, 400 would take ocuk.. well, I don't want to speculate, not weeks I would guess.

Anyway, its only a rip off if you're stupid enough not to shop around but my point is I wouldn't sweat it, the reason the prices haven't been changed is a) they probably didn't buy enough to get decent price adjustment terms and b) they probably can't be arsed.

That's why I don't buy electronics from the high streets...

I saw a 6600LE at my local industrial park - £199. eh?!
Asaka case fan - £15

Also, online electronic stalls = Distant Selling act advantage.

you can;t name competitors on this forum BUT you can give the names of high street shops because they simply just can;t compete with ocuk on price so they can;t be considered as competitors.

Nope - apparently not. I did that once and was warned.
I guess if the high street shop is opened by some tom, dick and harry with NO website... then maybe...

I remember seeing my mate in a car parts store where they wear orange / black out fits, looking at car stereos. I said to him that he could buy that 1/2 the price online but he still bought it anyway !.........

He can`t be a sucker as he didin`t mind paying silly money for it as long as he had it then and there on the spot. ( A bit like some peeps on here?) :p

Its not just PC Components, its pretty much everything you buy these days.

If you want to buy a new HD ready LCD TV for example,

Just bang a search into a well known search site and you will end up with the same model at £900 at one place, upto £1500 at another.

I dont buy from the highstreet but what you have to accept is that they tend to have a lot of staff, huuuuuuuuuuge store with hundreds of thousands of pounds of stock in at any one time therefor thier overheads are going to be massive compared to etailers. That said i have been to several stores in the US, Frys electronics for example, that have prices that are very competitive with online... They have the same, if not more, amount of staff, tonnes of stock etc...

Ah well...

I buy things like routers, printers, paper, games etc from these places because generally when I want them I want them NOOOOOOOW!

But almost any other considered purchase such as tv, washing machine, computer parts, clothing, even food from asda is done online.

a) Its normally cheaper
b) I don't have to queue
c) I can do it at midnight
d) A few drinks normally loosens the wallet a bit :p

well just to defend where in the world.....

they currently sell the amd x2 3800 am2 cheaper than OCuk...price £104.99 thru collect at store.... so comeon OCuk get the price even lower.

Daggman.

Ah yes and you can get even more off at Fry`s and the like with Rebates. Hell I was over there at the thanksgiving sales last year and people were leaving there with stacks of goodies that they would get rebated for in full. Practically FREE !!
Stores over here in "Ripp off Britain" you cannot compare with the States as they are worlds apart in terms of quality, customer service and value.

If I am really desperate for something I have to go into town, pay shed loads of money for parking, wait about half an hour to experience a store full of brain dead morons or try to evade the slimey over eager "sales" person. Then pay for overpriced goods and have someone blatantly read my pin number as I enter it into the "Discreet" pad.!!! OK only bitching here but you get my drift.
Shops are only useful for purchasing clothes/ food and seeing goods in the flesh before purchasing on line ! :p

you think thats a rip of - i took my 3000+ and 3800+ into a high street exchange place on saturday and got £39 and £90 for them but in the window they had a few 4800+ .............. £415, and i had just that morning recieved my 4800+ from ocuk for £207 - haha
