Re-encode just audio of an MKV file

So I have some videos which use the H264 video codec and AC3 5.1 audio codec. I play these with GOM Player, as this is my preferred video player - I haven't tried another player, but shall do so shortly.

But my problem is the music is far too loud and voices too quiet. I can almost bear to watch the videos with the GOM Player's normaliser enabled - but it's still fairly loud.

After a bit of reading, it seems the problem is AC3's dynamic range (whatever that is). So I am guessing that to get the sound I want, I just need to re-encode only the audio stream to something like MP3. Nothing is wrong with the video stream, therefore does not need re-encoding - only the audio stream needs re-encoding.

I've looked in HandBrake, but nothing stands out to me that lets me only re-encode the audio stream.

Anybody able to help?

When you just want mix in a new audio stream it's called 'remux-'ing. If you google that you'll find a few programmes, can't remember any off the top of my head.
