Re-install

Hi,

Just a quick one - my mates PC has goosed itself and I'm incharge of the re-install. He's got XP Home and his CD key - but can I install Windows using my XP Pro disk, then enter his XP Home validation code?

No, it will not work, I tried a long time ago to see what would happen, just said serial was invalid

XP Home serial will only work with XP Home CD and XP Pro serial will only work with the XP Pro CD

Ok, so if I 'aquire' a copy of XP Home, install it and pop his product code in - that will solve the problem?

Should do.

As long as you have a XP Home serial as that's the most important, any XP Home CD will work fine

Grand, cheers - it turns out another house mate has a XP Home CD so no dodgy-ness needed.

bear in mind it will only install with certain version xp home disks ie xp home, xp home with sp1, xp home sp1a, xp home sp2.
When installations ask for the key you must have the right version disk that the key recognises and install it accordingly!
