My mate has given me his laptop for an OS re install, I've got a copy of XP home, and the laptop has got its own license key on the back.

When it asks me for the key during the OS install, I type the one on the back, it says it's invalid.

It's a VAIO PCG-TR1MP

How do I get round this?

which version is your copy of XP Home?

Presuming its also an XP Home license on the base of the laptop you will need to use an OEM CD to reinstall XP Home on the laptop.

Get a branded sony version of the setup disk. Alternatively a cheap retail version of XP any version with its own serial.

I have had a similar problem with Vista when I had a older disc which did not reconise the license key, but a newer copy did!

Can you get hold of or try another disc.

I'm doing the job as a favour, so paying for a disc is not an option.

I thought if you had a key, and a legit key at that (that is on the bottom of the netbook itself), it would install trouble free.

Don't understand it. Do I need a Sony VAIO branded version of XP home? Is there such a thing?

I've had this before with a Sony. I spoke to a rep and they basically said that some models ship with an almost Volume Licensed version of the OS on it, so they require specific installation discs to match up with the key.

In the end I managed to find a Sony installation disk, luckily it didn't install any of their rubbish too. But as said above, I've also experienced the problem going away when a newer install disk is used.

Thanks, I think I'll try and find a Sony Volume license XP disc.

This has turned out to be one of those 'yeah I'll have a look at it' jobs that invariably takes ions longer than you imagined it would to complete.

Grrrrrr!
