Hi

Im thinking of getting a tdci focus and getting it remapped for a few hundred quid (supposed to get 30bhp extra), but ive been strongly advised not to do this by a mechanic whos 'tuned up' a few petrol cars and says its puts too much wear on the engine and can 'blow up'. Is this true?

I know its gonna need more frequent oil changes but can re-mapping really damage a diesel engine?

I guess if its done to a poor standard then yeah i guess it could damage the car. But ive heard Remaps have good results on diesels and also Tuningboxes are pretty good aswell

It won't damage the engine if it's remapped properly by a reputuble tuner, but it will increase the loads on the clutch, gearbox and other drivetrain components.

Doesnt even sound worth it to me. I had an even greater gain for just £17.
Depends on the car doesnt it, to gain 30bhp id have to buy a new turbo, intercooler and hosing to go with it now, probably run me to £500.

Why is it when people talk about remaps, they are only ever focussed on BHP increases?
The torque figures and smoothing of the curves make far more positive a difference, but unless it give 50+bhp, nobody cares.

Their site says 20 or 30bhp increase depending on the model 1.8 TDCI you have, although take that with a pinch of salt.

Superchips are generally a touch conservative with their outputs if anything, they quote 182 BHP for a 2.2 TDCi remap, but mine made 188 BHP at the RR day.

Ah nice :) They are probably quite accurate for turbo models, but for N/A they still claim 10-15BHP which is nonsense.

Thanks for the replies, theres some tuning boxes on ebay claiming to give the same power increase for £150

not worth it unless you know what to look for etc.

Go to a reputable chipper or remapper. loads of people on here have done it else join a Ford focus forum and ask for advice.

Tuning boxes just ramp up the fuel pressure and put more strain on the injectors and fuel pump.

Steer well clear would be my advice.

You're right... but even most diesel remaps are based around up'ing the fuel pressure... They don't even up the boost much.

A turbo and intercooler for £500. You'd be lucky!

New turbo for mine is going to be over a grand for just the parts, and thats if I get it from the states. An uprated Intercooler is at least £400 in parts alone.

What Mondeo do you have? Have you done a Blue Fin upgrade? I'm sorely tempted to buy one of these little babys for my Mondeo ST TDCi!

How much better does the car feel to drive? Do you get that lagg in 6th as you pull away on the motorway?

thanks

Greg

I have a feeling diesel turbochargers cost less than petrol ones

Possibly they don't have to spin as fast with the diesel low rev range so it might mean they cost less to produce?
