re my e38 quest - I think I may regret passing on this.....

That was my logic for trying to talk him into buying that M5 a while back and it didn't work :(.

This is different though its 6k not 18k if i was spending 6k thats a good car if i was spending 18k an old M5 for 13k or whatever wouldnt be my choice.

I can see why Fox no longer wants an e39 M5.

That sounds like gibberish i will start again.

If i was in the market for a 6k car and liked those 7s then thats surely got to be the one.

If i was in the market for a 18k car like Fox i would no longer want an e39 M5 unless i could stick it away and drive it in the dry as a second car.

That same garage has got a nice looking V reg 740 for 5k too.

If a mint E39 M5 was £6k I'd have one on the drive. DiamondMark hits the nail on the head. I don't want an old BMW as a primary car and having multiple cars isn't really something I can do either.

But R124 loves his E38's and clearly doesnt mind that - if not for the history thing, I think that car is gorgeous.

It's useless comparing it to an E65 because he's into E38's in the same way that I'd take an E39 over a pre LCI E60.

You see the grey V reg the same bloke has got? Black not grey im colour blind too.

Looks nice and I love his disclaimer:

"Disclaimer - Specification items that are not listed are deemed as being faulty or beyond economical repair"

So if it's not listed, it's knackered :p

Edit - And yer the Black one looks nice, love the piping on the leather.

Misses the PLG tax system by one day, unlucky!

Thats so typical for me... :(

Wouldn't bother me at all, the car will have wafted up and down the motorway and the car will had adjusted it's service schedule to fit with the usage patterns.

What WOULD bother me is that the gap between it and a similar E65 would be very slim:

86k over 9 years does not really shout motorway use to me.

The e65 does not appeal at all.

It is very nice but something happened after 2006. It had perfect history until then and then nothing for 3 years..

And having previously run an e38 for 2 years & 27k ish, I know damn well that they need a bit of tlc during that sort of period...

Also nothing for 2005?

It's nice, but if you're paying "Full history" money I'd sort of expect full history.

Yes, absolutely. The last thing I want to do is drop £5k on it and then spend out again, which I'm sure it'll want for something or other.

The E38 is a low mileage, mint, last of the line example in a truely stunning colour combination with arguably the best engine.

The E65 is a high mileage, bottom of the market early example in an average colour combination with the 3.5 litre engine.

Whilst for some people the E65 is a better choice it is a tad like saying 'Why buy that mint E39 530i Sport Champagne II edition when a grand more gets you an 03 plate E60 525i SE'.

Nail, head & all that. :)

Ooh yes. :)

That nail is taking some **** today ! :D

Yes, but no wide screen Nav and that is something that I had decided I really wanted in the 728i but missed out on and regretted it. Trivial perhaps? but - in a way I suspect Fox would think, - if I am going to be daft enough to buy one of these, I want the right spec.

Shame though because, yes it is nice - I love Cosmos Black - my old one was this colour (not that the same colour again is an issue, its not.)

have your holiday and forget about the car.

Yes, can't help thinking I'll rue the day, but yes I think thats the sane option..

I have 12 days in the sun to ponder the whole e38 thing, if its still there on my return (very opossible) - the sellers could find a large truck pulling up outside their lot fairly soon!!! :D

Thanks for the input chaps, I think, you have confirmed my thoughts. :)

I love his disclaimer:

"Disclaimer - Specification items that are not listed are deemed as being faulty or beyond economical repair"

Oh and that bothers me BIG time!

Are you sure Fox? It might just be an old (2001) firmware, that's how my original mk3 used to look which was also from a similar age 5 series. It's just a shame its on the OBC, if you do go and look at the car check that Navigation appears in the root menu.

No, the Y plate one.

The one I keep reading as 51 plate.... :o

Hmm, thats not good then. I was hoping that would be sorted with it being later.

I guess - for some absurd fee - I could upgrade it? - not that I would use the nav tbh, I hate the things tbh. But my daughter would like a functioning DVD at least, for watching films etc when she's sat in the car texting - which is something she likes to do....

You could buy a Mk4 computer for £400 which is highly advisable anyway.

It doesnt play DVD's though, it just reads the maps off DVD's.

Which tbh is the opposite of my requirement. disregarding the NAV, Would the existing setup still play dvd's?

For gods sake dont get hung up on what size screen a car has got when it comes to something like this.

Like me on my quest for my XJ8, in the end there is a sacrifice to be made on a 10 year old car, buy the best car, not the best nav screen.
