Re-registering SORN

I needed to register my old car (due to lack of funds and use) sorn last month so took the tax form when it arrived and duly did so online.

However, I took the opportunity to read the back of the form and saw that you have to re-register your vehicle sorn every year.. This is the first I know of this and applys because I've had an old 306 sorn since Nov '08 and haven't re-registered it since... Apparently you're supposed to be sent a reminder each year to do this but I've been sent nothing and I genuinely didn't know about this need to re-register!

So I'm now in a bit of a quandry what to do? I'd happily contact the dvla to re-register the car but I get the uncanny feeling that I'll simply be slapped with a fine. The only reason I've kept the car this long is for sentimental reasons really in the hope that one day I'd get it going again (it was my first proper car) but I certainly dont want to get fined for something I knew nothing about till now. It's pretty useless now. Tyres flat, engine knackered etc.

I'd really appreciated people thoughts/advice on what options I have? Could this re-registering have come in after I'd done it for my 306 perhaps?

They should send you a reminder every year, just as if it were taxed. If you don't renew the SORN in time they'll send you an £80 fine in the post. Must have slipped through the net somehow if neither of those things has happened since 2008.

Thanks for the reply Clarkey.

Given that it must have slipped through anyone got any advice what I should do? Could I just get it scrapped or something?

Yeah, SORN it. My colleage taxed his car after 2 months of it running out no problem. I doubt anything will come of it.
