Hi all

I want to re-wire my PC so I can get all the cables tidy and have a good clean of the inside!

I haven't built a PC before, so I don't know what goes where.

Is it a simple case of put a lead where it fits?

Your question sort of implies running before you can walk. I wouldn't worry to much about the tidyness for the time being as long as you can get the thing to work then you've done a great job.

I most cases (no pun intended), just following the motherboard manual is a good place to start. Don't attempt a build until you understand each step before picking up a screw driver.. Ask questions, no matter how daft you might feel. Not asking could cost you dearly. Everyone started some where and there enough pmemebrs here to help. Tackle the basics and once your up and running, you can think about tidying things up a bit.

ps - remember to use the stand offs !!

As Huddy says starting off with tidying cables might be a little bit like running before you can walk :)

However in general most cables will only fit where they are meant to (but some can go in the wrong way round and risk damaging the motherboard*)

If you do try to tidy up the cables make a note of where any that connect to the motherboard went, and the orientation (the motherboard manual will help in general, but even with the manual things like USB can be a PITA).

I basically started with zero knowledge, but a couple of handy books (well before the internet was available), and the habit of taking notes when dealing with something i've not done before has helped many times (both with computers and when taking anything else apart, including my mother's washing machine:p).
These days if you run into any problems, or have anything you're uncertain of either a google, or asking on the forums will get an answer most of the time :)

*Things like the firewire, and USB connections to the case are quite often individual wires rather than keyed blocks that can only fit in the right socket, the right way round.

By the sound of it the comp is already built and working?

Above is advice you should follow, I would also recommend taking some pics inside, nice and close so after unplugging a load of cables you have another point of reference as a confidence check that you have got things in the right place, mainly applicable to the case front panel power switches / led etc (I certainly wouldn't recommend just using that)

That's if you have another PC / laptop to view the pics!

yeh the pc was already built and working, I just wanted to tidy it up a bit.

Its all backtogether now, all apart from the GFX card, as I didnt remember which powercable went in which hole.

Other than that, i THINK i put it all back right :S
