Re-wooding a Shelf System

Hi folks,

A while back I ordered a John Lews Calia desk (https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewi...yWo8mSiZZaLqo8XSjeoaAnwGEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds). No idea how I afforded it or why I decided it was worth the dollar; but me replacing an old 80 quid battered IKEA dining table under duress may have played into it :D

They do a wider range of matching bits but I was priced out pretty quickly so I then copped out and ordered a slightly cheaper but similar industrial style shelf system from M&S; with veneered chipboard that is slightly too dark.

I'm looking to "re-wood" the shelf system (you can see it in the background of this picture) with wood similar to the Calia (foreground). It is like a deep grained textured finish that is absolutely smooth to the touch.

Question - where do I buy such wood? :D It doesn't need to match exactly but similar would be ideal?

Should have just bought the matching bits :p
Luckily that option is totally off the cards and they don't do anything similar and what they have is too big, out of stock and not as functional :D. It is also £700!!! So my man maths says I have a healthy budget :D

Vinyl wrap? Or 3mm veneered ply? Or are you wanting to replace the shelves / upstand etc? Better photo please!!
It is basically just 4 shelves + some side panels; so if I can find the wood I can just recreate the parts really easily.

I wouldn't want the cheapy feel of vinyl- but veneer ply may work as it is recessed anyway.

Ask John Lewis who manufactured it for them, and then ask that company?

Otherwise, local furniture makers (as they probably have a wood stockpile), or maybe local timber merchants.

Yeah first port of call was here; second is a lad on Etsy who re-creates it in the same style (knock off furniture, who knew?). Third will be JL themselves as I remember it coming from some non-descript manufacturer in Thailand IIRC.

Having a check -- the cabinet at the bottom is kind of recessed so veneer is a real option without looking daft. Then the top 3 things I can get shelves as it is probably as simple (versus veneering all surfaces).

When I make cabinets, I use MDF of varying depths - 25mm for sides and then 12mm for shelves - with12mm veneered ply / MDF for shelves and face it with the same stuff.

You can glue and or/ screw or I use a very old (eBay!) domino jointer.

If it’s definitely a wood effect you want - then it’s deffo a ring round Jobby!

As an aside - if you wanted to contrast the wood with a painted item - MDF paints beautifully!

MDF is also much more flexible than ply or furniture bosrd so I often route out a channel and fit some steel tube in it.

Good luck!

I had a similar issue, had the table and needed the desk but that was out of budget, got around this by buying the same table but used (£350) and proceeded to cut it down, buy new legs and now have a matching desk. Also had enough to make a coffee table as well.
