Reaction time whilst gaming.

My reaction times are awful. You know the dropped ruler test? I did it once and let the entire ruler fall through my fingers to the ground :p That's sloth-level reactions right there.

For what it's worth, I avoid competitive games like the plague. No online FPS or anything like that. Turn-based tactical for me :p Which I also suck at, but at least it's not because of my poor reactions :p

Given the first part of the post I'm not so sure :p

if you talking pro then yes age matters for general online games not really. its great having a faster reaction time but proper pro gaming you need all traits. game sense you will never lose just slower reaction doesnt mean you will be bad especially if you have a better game sense of how it works

Well that's depressing.

Also there's this but it seems wildly inaccurate as I managed to half my score with practice!

I had 2 tries with mouse click and 4 with keypress. My estimated age results were as follows:

45
20
23
"We're not sure if you're an actual human being"
"We're not sure if you're an actual human being"
"We're not sure if you're an actual human being"

I think that message is triggered by a reaction speed under 300 ms, since my reaction speed was 293,292 and 292 ms for those last 3. I vaguely recall seeing a figure of 300ms cited somewhere as the time required to respond to a signal and press a button.

The much higher first score was due to the fact that I was watching the road signs at the side of the road for the emergency stop signal.

I'm 48.

Hmm....I played around a bit more out of interest. 297ms reaction time gives an estimated age of 18, so the "human" cutoff point must be between 294 and 296. I am consistently significant faster with a keypress than with a mouse click. I'm averaging ~350ms with mouse (311ms fastest time) and ~295ms with keyboard. Interesting, but I agree that it seems wildly inaccurate.

I'm pretty sure I'm quite a bit slower than I was with more complex input and decison-making in games, though.

I don’t really play now but when I was nearing the end of my gaming I felt about as fast as I ever was but I was having trouble concentrating or being as focused as I used to be, my mind would wander a bit and I would find myself dead more often than I was used to, not always but it was something I became more and more aware of.

I went back to FPS games recently (mostly Counter Strike), and I found that my reaction speed was indeed lower. However, my experience, map knowledge, and knowledge of mechanics ensured that I was still able to compete, somewhat.

3 goes of that emergency stop thing and apparently I have the reactions of a 25 year old. Well yeah, maybe, but my accuracy is terrible in game. :p

Maybe us old gits need to spend time training here:

The Exact aiming starts out OK but I get stressed out and my accuracy completely breaks when it all starts going mad.

I still play COD2/COD4 at least 3 times a week, i always come top 9 rounds out of 10.

Gets boring constantly being number 1, no challenge.

What I find funny is people who have played FPS games for years but whenever they play, their K/D ratio is 1-10 or 3-20, I just think give up already :p

There's a few players in our server who say their reaction times have dropped massively since hitting their 30's but there's also a bloke in his 50's who's as awesome FPS player.

As someone who played Unreal Tournament "Instagib" more than the average player from ~2000, shockingly my reflexes and accuracy are relatively awful ~17 years on and in my mid 40s!

While it's not a shooting game, I'm very aware that some days, it takes a while for me to get out of neutral to play Rocket League to a relatively acceptable Gold2 standard.

Same here. Even single player mode is a bit much these days never mind multiplayer. But to be honest I have little interest in those things anymore either.

I'm 55 apparently, although my ability to respond on a friday afternoon to a tiny box hidden in the corner of my monitor (in work) probably isn't very representative.

Tried this one instead. https://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/java/redgreen.html

Averaged 0.241 so I think I'm okay, the brake test just sucks.

0.2404 for me, so I think it's easier than the brake test for some reason.

I think the circumstances in which you took the brake test sucked, rather than the test itself.

My reactions are sub 0.2.. unfortunately like the sex i'm normally premature at shooting

Last year i went on holiday and they had a table tennis table, thinking back to my school days (now 45) i was like i can do this.....
I found out that either i am Jesus reincarnate (Hole in hand where the ball went through the bat) or i now have the brain of a slug.

I think it's the first as i'm still nifty on fps games
It could be i'm more like Tony Adams (Arsenal player) who adapted as he slowed down to time things better.

Used to play Black Hawk Down and wasn't too shabby. Beat the germans in their own leagues with my/our team (3n)

I'm worse now at games, especially FPS, simply because I am less patient. In CSGO for example, I used to be a careful and strategic player, but now more often than not I get bored of it after a few rounds and just end up running out and getting killed straight away. :o Reaction times still seem alright though.
