As the title suggests I have been informed I have 3 days left to activate Windows. This dosn't come after installing a new motherboard or CPU, but after adding a DVD-RW.
The problem is I can't find my CD key. If I phone microsoft will they be able to confirm I have previously had Windows installed and be able to give me a new activation key?

If you elect to telephone MS to activate then it will start an activation wizard that will show an installation ID. Enter this via the phone or read it out to the CSR and they should activate windows for you no problem.

If you do need to find your product key google for Magic Jellybean

As for being asked to reactivate after "only a DVD drive", I expect that you've previously upgraded other things since activating, and the DVD drive is one extra that makes XP request reactivation. It's certainly not supposed to ask for reactivation if the only thing you've ever changed is your DVD writer.

No this was the first change. I understood I was allowed a certian amount of points or something before having to reactivate but anyway got it fixed. Cheers.

Your CD key should be stuck to the side of the case, unless you bought retail (I think).

Yes its really really stupid to stick the sticker on the case . . .If he had done so he would have no issues at all in finding it, so why is this stupid  .

Complying with license agreements is stupid!

I think it's something like 120 days after which you go back to zero points on the upgrade front. I've just upgraded motherboard and graphics card, I doubt I'll be able to change anything else for a while. Still, my bank card will be happy about that! :)
