read-only problem

having a strange one, my external HDD seems to be defaulting every folder to read-only. If I untick the read-only attribute in explorer, the folder puts itself back to read only straight away??? :confused:

But is it really read only? Can you write a new file to one of the folders?
Windows shows all folders as read only if you go the Right Click>Properties route.
