Reading NTFS file system from a live Linux CD?

I seem to remember doing this in the past and although you could see the directory listings there were all kinds of permission errors hence you couldn't do anything.
I have unbootable win 7 HD and was wondering if a live CD would allow me to copy files from it to external drive. Tried all recovery options for drive, no go.

Ubuntu definitely works, use it to fix Windows cocking up permissions.
