A while back i made a thread about wanting a dslr etc however the more i think about it i imagine what i really want is something more compact but that can still take great shots so maybe something between a normal digital camera and a dslr?

Will mainly be used for family stuff but may also try and use it out and about as a hobby sort of thing!

I would say £300 max spend for now?

Any suggestions

Thanks!

Should get you started, compact and a versatile kit lens.
I am now shooting with the X-M1 and a couple of primes, really enjoy it for the size and straight out of camera quality. Remember, there will be some learning curve, it doesn't magically make all photos beautiful :)

Also, all the other primes Fuji offer are well priced, I am saving up for the 56mm f1.2, something that would have been impossible if I wanted a Canon or Nikon equivalent, whilst saving for a house deposit.

I'll agree with mr Jones. I almost bought the Fuji myself. They are doing a great range of small cameras capable of taking fantastic pics.

And after several decades of lugging around dlsr kit I have now shrunk down myself.

Result is that I am almost never without my camera and get many more pics

Looks smart! Did come across the xm1 aswell and liked the styling of it

Must say i dont know a lot about cameras so would be up for learning a bit about it all too!

For example the lens that comes with that one, is that a good all rounder?

Pretty standand 24mm to 75mm dlsr equivalent. 24mm great for wide angle landscapes and 75mm long enough zoom for portrait.

If it all goes well you can add the 50-230 lens (75mm to 345mm) for more reach and sports/wildlife.

160 ish new prob £100 or less on eBay.

If you get the bug then you will prob add a nice prime lens for family pics.

Personally for what you want and to learn about cameras u can't go wrong with the x-m1

After all two years ago when launched with this lens it was £700. That's a lot of camera for the money now.

They rate the included lens very highly. Also note they say this camera with Fuji prime lens takes exceptional pictures

In case you missed it, the link I put was for a Fuji X-A2. Minor difference iirc.

The kit lens will start you off well and when you realise at what legth you shoot most often, that's when a prime will be useful, especially a fast one (lower f number, wider the apature. I.e. More light, so hand holding night shots will be easier... Non of this Image Stabalisation malaky)
