Hi all,

I have 4 gig of Crucial Ballistix in my machine and I also have a 4 gig Sandisc Cruzer memory stick.

Would I notice any beneficial difference if I use the 4 gig usb memory stick with my 4 gig of Crucial, or would I be better off just leaving in the 4 gig of Crucial and removing the memory stick??

Many Thanks

Hey there,

The ReadyBoost in Vista only works if you have a fast enough Mem Stick (which I'm gonna guess you have)

All ReadyBoost does is keep a COPY of the pagefile on the mem stick. What this does is when the hard drive is going crazy either installing something, virus scanning or anything else HDD intensive it can grab the files off the mem stick instead of waiting for the hard drive to go to the pagefile and access the data you are after.

For instance:

Runing virus scanner and have loads of IE's open. Because you have so many it has kicked some of the IE's out of RAM so has to load it from the pagefile. Because your HDD is being cained it would take a while to get it off the HDD but because the mem stick is not busy it can get it straight away. Even if the HDD isn't all that busy it can still load it from the mem stick and keep the hard drive ready for whatever else...

From what I belive mem sticks are also SLIGHTLY quicker at the sequential reads or what ever it needs than a HDD but I can't remember that for certain.

Because you know have 4GB of RAM you will find that Vista doesn't have to keep kicking programs out of the RAM and into the Pagefile so it may not use it as much.

I use the ready boost but like I said, Only really see a performance gain when my RAM is being cained (often with only 2GB in vista) and the hard drive is also busy doing something else.

If you don't need the mem stick it might be worth leaving it in but if you need it for something else I wouldn't hesitate taking it out of the system.

All the best, Doug.

So I might as well take it out then and use it as a normal storage??

If you need it for external storage then use it for that.

Im using mine for ready boost and then whenever I need to put stuff on it it's already plugged in and I can never lose it!

Like I said, for me, with 2GB RAM, it's a bit more useful. To you it may not be with the extra 2GB RAM.
