ReadyBoost

I have never found any preformance gain myself - and I cant see many of us noting a difference of a second or so without a stopwatch

USB sticks are so cheap now, this is less of a reason than previously but until 8GB performance sticks are literally given away for free I will still swear by actually having 4GB+ physical ram instead

No one seems to have done a proper analysis of whether it speeds up performance or not, so I remain unconvinced. Some articles I have read on it suggest that the difference noticed is a placebo.

I am going to give it another go now though.

EDIT: Hmm, Windows has decreed my 8GB OCZ Diesel as "not having the required performance characteristics for use in speeding up your system" :(

Just done a little test

With ReadyBoost:

Time taken to boot to login screen: 57.7 secs
Time taken to load windows from login screen: 46.3 secs
Total: 104.0 secs

Without ReadyBoost:

Time taken to boot to login screen: 64.6 secs
Time taken to load windows from login screen: 38.5 secs
Total: 103.1 secs

From what I recall of ReadyBoost you can't just plug a stick in and then see performance increases.
It works based on regularly used files/apps and so it would need to be plugged in over a course of days/weeks before it is worthwhile

Readyboost is not a replacement to physical ram, it is an addition with the advantage that it is not volatile when you switch off.

True, but you can see the difference by having a 'trained' readyboost setup and removing it.
