OK so I've just bought an Antec H1200 and its arriving today, it's to attach to my 2500k (finally). After years of running at stock on the stock cooler, when removing the stock cooler which I imagine is pretty straight forwards -

  • will there be thermal paste already on my cpu that I will need to remove before applying the new paste coming with the AIO?

  • If so, how do I remove/clean the paste from the cpu?

  • How much of the new thermal paste do I apply? And is it to the pump or the cpu that I apply it to?

Told you I was a noob!

If the Antec H1200 is brand new then it should have paste already on the CPU water block. If there is any paste on your CPU then that should be removed first before fitting the H1200. That can be done with kitchen roll and then some of this https://www.overclockers.co.uk/arct...-and-surface-purifier-60ml-kit-th-000-ac.html

If you don't have the thermal paste remover/cleaner then you can just use Isopropyl Alcohol

Also if at all you do need to apply any paste in future, apply it to the CPU and a small size pea blob or a line like a grain of rice, pressure will spread it nicely when the cooler is applied on top.

Personally, I always apply paste to the CPU and let the cooler do the rest for spreading when it's seated and tightened.

Thanks! Yes it's brand new, I assume I can pickup isopropyl alcohol from any supermarket? I'd rather not buy the OCUK stuff as I was wanting to install today really whilst I had a rare day off

I've just used kitchen roll or a clean lint free cloth to wipe the cpu clean . I have never used isopropyl alcohol or any fancy cleaner just make sure its clean

I use bog roll, and in the past I have put some vodka on the bog roll to get rid of particularly stubborn paste... :p

Good luck installing it. Mine was a right pain I the rear end. Hope you also don't have the problems I've had.

Thanks guys, bog roll it is! Didn't even turn up today which I'm quite peeved about, it's now scheduled for Sunday

Oh damn really!? Eek. Not looking forward to installation then, how do you rate it once installed?

Mine could just be due to the angles of my hardware but it was night on impossible to have the core stay in position whilst trying to fit the damn retaining screws. Also once installed - well I've had one returned because from day 1 it made weird noises - turned out the pumps had disintegrated internally. The second one is now noisy as hell and randomly has the fans run at 100% but without any cooling effect, have to restart the pc.

Oh god - kinda regretting ordering now by the sounds of that. Are the included instructions really as naff as people make out?

It's gonna give me a headache figuring out how to install it as it is. I don't know of any good local PC shops either that could do it

It will be fine, ignore Dis for now and see if you actually encounter any issues yourself. :p

Oh the instructions weren't terrible, it's just definitely a 3 pairs of hands situation!

And you may well not have any issues. I could just be really unlucky.

Haha ok feeling a little bit easier cheers guys, does anyone know if Antec are making an AM4 bracket for these? I've tried contacting them on social media but they never reply!
