I was really looking forward to this game which is released on the App Store today but it appears to be strangled by a very costly In App Purchasing system.

The game is free to download but you're soon hit with costs of £10+ to buy packs containing 4 cars and a couple of tracks. After each race you have to pay to repair your car (oil and tyres) or wait for 20-30 minutes for it to complete. On top of this you also have to pay to repair damage to your car sustained while racing.

Way to spoil a good game :/

I was initially hating on the free-to-play model for this game but at least so far it doesn't seem too bad. Somewhere in between the Valve TF2 model (basically a free game unless you like customising stuff) and the Dead Trigger/Simpsons Tapped Out model (useless without an IAP).

Also the OP is talking utter trash. You aren't "hit by costs" and you have to pay to repair your car but it doesn't have a time penalty (in other words you get rewarded for careful driving). What does have a time penalty is servicing (oil/tyres/etc.) but I've done plenty of races and only on my first complete service (and 45min wait) now.

IAP is STUPIDLY profitable on the App Store. It's basically drug dealer tactics. Instead of getting some people to pay £4.99 once. Get many people to try the game, get addicted, and start paying perhaps even £2/week. Quickly adds up. Just look at the top grossing section of the App Store and most are FTP/IAP.

To earn all of the cars in the game rather that buy them with real money, a player would need to finish 6,801 races with an average (per our RR3 stats) of 4:10 per race earning R$3,700 per race. That would equal 472 hours to earn the R$25,163,573 it would cost in the in-game currency to buy all 46 cars. That does not include the cost for repairs, maintenance, or upgrades which can be rather expensive.

If a player wanted to take the shortcut and buy all of the cars in the game with real money, that would cost £330 in in-app purchases

You say that, then go on to repeat exactly whet I posted.

It's that bit you've stated which is very wrong. You only have to do this when they each get low (with no impact on car performance until then) not after every race like with damage.

Servicing - Time Penalty but takes a good many races for any of them to go down to the point when they start to impact car performance.

Damage - Start impacting the cars performance right away.

In other words you have roughly an hour playing and then 40mins wait. As a reviewer stated it's a bit odd because as you progress through the game you get more cars. Then you don't have to wait as you can just switch car.

The cost of damage is actually easy to replenish for "free". Just do one of the zero-damage races like a drag one a couple of times and that covers it for a session.

Maths has just ruined it for me now :D

Actually having a think (and what GTA767 has done) I know exactly why they've done this: piracy (especially a problem on Android). This way they stand to make a bucket load on both platforms.

Not sure why everyone's so holier than thou about this. You don't ever need to hand over cash for anything. The repairs are in-game currency that you pick up by racing, and the upgrades/servicing just require a wait while it is done.

The in-game currency thing's been done for years and years on all platforms and some AAA games, so that just leaves the waiting thing which is fine unless you're sitting playing games on your phone for hours upon hours. I'd expect most dip in and out, so the wait doesn't matter.

If you don't want to download it, then obviously that's up to you. Smacks of cutting your nose off to me though.

Ninja edit: Are Eurogamer credible now? Last time I paid attention they were poor.

Sure you can use the in-game currency for minor stuff but it doesn't last long.
You'll soon get frustrated using all of your winnings to keep a basic car running.

DL this over the weekend, about 80% in on the first level, up to level 15 driver, own 4 cars, loads of credit stuff in hand, best of all, it hasn't cost me a penny. Great game, very addictive.

The problem for the "hardcore" types that are complaining about this is that the plan has worked perfectly. It's at the top of the free charts, rising up the highest grossing charts and has a 4 Star overall rating of which the vast majority are 5 Star.

Do you really think EA now care about what some whiney nerds on the Internet say? A stupid amount of people are playing this game, the vast majority are incredibly happy with it, a sizeable chunk are paying money to them (which should be a continuos revenue stream instead of a peak-and-die-off one) AND they have mostly done away with piracy.

You can avoid waiting for repairs by switching off WiFi then moving the clock forward an hour or so. Return to the game and the repairs will be complete. switch WiFi back on and the clock will reset to the correct time. :)

I love the Car racing games I have played Need for Speed Most Wanted and Need for Speed Underground 2. I really enjoyed these games. Whenever I played racing games I feel like it's real racing competition.

I'm not a fan of IAP but so far I'm quite happy, I've maxed out my little Focus and am doing fairly well in the latter races.

The car prices do seem steep and with upgrades to my existing motor means I don't have much spare cash now. I seem to get quite a few races before I need to have a service and its not like I'm playing for 3 hours solid so not a problem for me personally.

Might change as I progress but so far haven't spent a quid but have had many hours enjoyment.

I don't buy into the calculations re. owning every car, they may be correct but who wants to own all 46? A number of the cars are basically the same spec-wise so besides getting them for completeness sake there isn't much to be gained.

Gotta say am very impressed with the graphics and presentation, very high quality and really didn't think my ageing iPad 2 would cope with 20+ cars plus some nifty effects. Is there much improvement on later devices? I can see some texture popping as I get closer to a car in front until I'm right on top of it a which point it looks nice and glossy.
