I'm looking for some REALLY fundamental advice about my system.

Basically used for music/video and the stock cpu fan is deafening. (and typically 67degC when full screen watching films)

Hope someone can point me in the right direction.

(I'm currently running ubuntu v.10.04)

Below I have included an extract from "dmidecode and /proc/cpuinfo" which I hope partly includes all the information I'm after.

So........ respectfully.......

Q1. What cpu have I got.
Q2. When asking for cooling/noise solution, do I specify eg. the socket, the cpu or what? (is my socket? lga775? maybe.)
Q3. Can you see if the cpu been overclocked.(BTW I don't want to overclock)
Q4. What would you use.. (I would like a REALLY cheap (even 2nd hand) low noise/cool solution.)

Thanks very much for taking an interest.
(If these questions are to trivial for you please don't be sarcastic)

Thanks....

I had downloaded the manual and taken a look at various linux diagnostics. I can't put my finger on whether its a 755 socket the motherboard manual does not mention the socket type.

(hope mentioning urls is ok here?)

Budget -- great question probably under £30 ish

I'm pretty practical and hunting through junk for bits.

Many of the current/newer coolers will be compatible with LGA775. You might need to change the backplate, but that ain't too hard. A bit of fiddeling maybe, but not hard.

(I'm currently running ubuntu v.10.04)

When I first saw that I thought for one moment that was your CPU voltage!

I would second getting the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, I had this on my old rig which was using a Core 2 Duo e6400 @ 3Ghz. Great little cooler for the money and still worth a buy today.

I should point out those old P4 were/are power hungry monsters they always did run hot.
