Ok was setting up a dell SC1425 for work and for some reason windows wouldnt install, so i attatched the hard disk into my pc, disconnected all my disks so it had only the one from the dell box and my cd drive installed, put windows onto that disk and so on, disconnected it, re-connected it and came up saying that ntdlr was missing, ok fair enough i tried the recovery console on xp disk using fixmbr to see if that would sort it, nope, heres the strange part, if i leave the xp install cd in drive it will boot normally, if i dont that error appears again, any ideas?

Perhapse your system is booting to cd and when you dont press any key like it says the cd software searches for and boot windows where as without the cd the bios is looking for the OS and some thing goes wrong? Perhapse try reinstalling windows using another CD ensuring you have the HDD as primary/master on the IDE cable with the pins also in the right places.

Just a poorly educated guess.

Right i've checked my BIOS settings and the first booting hard disk is the correct one yet doesnt seem to be booting still, now it comes up with disk boot failure when the XP cd is not inserted, but still ntdlr is missing when theres no cd
