Basically I wish to use RealVNC while at work to use my laptop which is sitting at home. VNC is fine at work however when I try to start a VNC Server on my laptop I get an error message saying 'Access is denied (5)'

From brief searching this problem seems to relate to either windows 2000 or not being administrator. However my laptop runs windows vista and I am the sole user and administrator.

Anyone seen this before or any idea what it could be? The RealVNC is a clean install and same problem occurs after re-install.

What anti-virus are you running on the problem machine? We've seen this before with an overzealous virus scanner blocking the application

Is this the service or just the server instance?

I've had a few issues with VNC on vista, gave up with it in the end as it's not specifically supported I think.

I think you need the paid for version of RealVNC to use it on Vista. UltraVNC is a nice free alternative which does work.

I know this one. Had problems with it at work, one of the things I had to do on a few machine down south

Uninstall VNC
Install and untick 2 options (start service mode and register)
Run VNC server (usermode)
set password if needed
Add usermode to start programs startup
Firewall exceptions - file&print sharing, winvnc4.exe
Test

If that doesnt work Disable Defender or Remove using - msi exec /uninstall windowsdefender.msi /quiet /log uninstall.log
