My RIG:

i5 4690K (stock but soon to be OC'ed)
GTX770
8GB DDR3 2666Mhz RAM

Xmas coming up and thinking about what I want for xmas from the missus. If I were to get another 770 and SLI them, what realistically can I expect on terms of improvements can I expect in gaming? and what, if anything with video editing? I run games on 1 monitor at 1080p. Highest settings I can get away with. I do have 3 monitors but only game on 1.

Thanks.

Here's an idea of the possible gains

If I were you I'd sell your existing GPU and get the best single card you can afford. GTX970/980ti or R9 380X/390(X). The 980ti is probably overkill at 1080p but...what a wonderful GPU

If I were to sell my GPU and get £100 for it then the 970 would be affordable. But the 980Ti is out of my price range just now. Will need to be sub £200 spend on this.

Is a single 970 really better than 2 770's though? GPU boss seems to think that other than memory there isnt much difference between the cards?

Assuming 1080p gaming then the GTX970 would be the way to go then.

+1. Having recently ditched GTX 980 SLI I can whole heartedly recommend a single more powerful card over two in SLI. Although SLI has markedly improved over the years, there are still too many games that it doesn't work well with: Wolfenstein (OpenGL ), Batman AK (broken) and Fallout 4 (no profile) are recent examples.

GPU Boss doesn't have a wide enough set of tests for this comparison. Check out some 970 reviews and you'll see that it soundly beats a 770.

Edit: don't forget you can always SLI the 970 down the line too if appropriate.

OK thanks. I'll go down that route then. Is the 970 £160 "better" than the 770 for sure? I want something that will smoothly run occulus rift when it comes out. I believe the occulus doubles the workload on the GPU because it has to draw 2 different 1080p screens for each frame. hopefully a 970 and overclocked 4690K will do this.

Even at only 1080p, some later games will get close to the 2GB limit you have on a 770. Better to give yourself a bit more headroom and go with the 970.

£160 better is hard to measure. A 970 will use less power than sli 770, produce less heat. Will work without the hassle of an sli profile and has nearly double the Vram (3.5GB of fast RAM).

For sure. In GTA V im already set to use 2670mb of GPU RAM!?! (Thats with Nvideas optimal settings for Nvidea experience) Somehow I am getting away with it but would sure like to max that game right out.

I've got it looking really nice but the only thing that lets it down is the AA. Im only at 2x AA and I would like to go higher. AA is a big thing for me. Hate jaggy/shiny lines ruining the experience.

I've been doing a lot of research and I think I'm going to get a MSI R9 390 rather than a 970. I know they are similar, and I consider myself an Nvidea "fanboy" but the 390 does seem to outperform. And that 8GB RAM....wow. Anyone want to convince me otherwise i would be very glad of more input.
