Realistic WWII FPS

It's a nackered format for some, but I just can't seem to get enough of WWII FPS.

I've played Call of Duty 2 for a few years now and have really enjoyed it. But after completing the singleplayer around 5 times and knowing Carentan like the back of my hand - I feel like I want to move onto something new to me, with the idea being a totally new 'feel' to the game.

I'm far from totally amazing on COD2 - but the multiplayer doesn't really require a great deal of skill and for the most part can just be a spraying or nading based game. I understand most multiplayer games have drawbacks of some sort and I actually enjoy COD2 and it's community - but I think I want something a bit more, realistic?

I've looked at Red Orchestra, Battlefield 1942, Day of Defeat: Source and the Medal of Honor titles. I'm sure there are a lot more so feel free to fire suggestions at me.

I could probably buy a few of these games, but I fear if I did, my ambition to be good in one of them and ability to get my true 'value for money' would be hindered along the way.

I'm not against any of the titles mentioned, but I sold my Battlefield 2 because I didn't like how it played. I didn't like the feel of it. I have CS:S and rarely play it - But I think thats just because of the modern terrorist element.

Basically asking for a WWII game that has a good/active community and is perhaps the more realistic. Cutting edge graphics aren't really important, if sacrificed for gameplay and/or game enjoyment.

hmm, id really have to go with Day Of Defeat Source, think you can pick the full game up from steam for about £9
its a great intense fps that takes a bit of getting used to, but very rewarding and fun
theres no shortage of servers or community support / input ..

I've not played it myself, but I think WW2 Online may be up your street. Theres someone in here who is a regular player, hopefully he'll drop by and give you some info on it.

This Game

- It's not out yet but if you're willing to wait it could turn out to be absolutely amazing. (Could be waiting for about 100 years though :p)

DoD:S Is good fun aswell, if you've got a mate who has it, they can give you a 3 day guest pass.

Personally I enjoyed allied assault back in the day as it was a very well made game. COD 1 + expansion + 2 are amazingly hard to beat though for WW2 shooters

I really doubt that will be coming out at all, which is a massive shame :(

Have you played Brothers in Arms? It's somewhat like CoD but comes across as being a bit more 'realistic', and throws in a squad control system, and a really challenging cinematic campaign.
Definitely worth a try if you're a fan of CoD.

If you want realism, then definitely try WW2 Online. I played it for several years and if you really put some time into it, it's great. The graphics are far from cutting edge, but the scale of the game and the realism of it more than makes up for it. To get the most out of it, you really need to join (or tag along) with an organised squad. Have a look here.

That'll be me :)

WWII Online is a full on military sim with the war between the Allied and Axis going on 24/7 on a single server using historically accurate equipment. From what you say it sounds like your cup of tea. The GFX are not as good as the likes of COD2 or BF1942 but considering the huge scale and the scope of the game that's understandable.

You can play as infantry, armour, air, sea or artillery. If you are that way inclined you can work with the high commands and direct the strategy of the conflict and the RD&P of equipment.

They bill it as the toughest PvP in the world so it should be challenge enough
for you ;)

Here's a few screens to give a flavour of the game.

Tailgunner.

Axis Paras.

Loading freighter for Allied attack on Zeelands.

I'm with you when it comes to WWII FPS games.
The medal of honour and COD series have to be my all time favourite games.
I got fed up last year with the lack of new PC games released and I was even more annoyed when I found out there was no news for the release of COD3 for the PC.
I love playing these type of games online and found 2006 one of the worst years for PC games.
There seems a decline in PC games and I honestly think the PC games markets days are numbered.
I ended up biting the bullet and going back on my words (I will never again buy a console) and bought an Xbox 360.
I have several top titles for it and all I do is play COD3 online via Xbox live :)
Being a hard core PC gamer I didn't think I would ever be able to get used to a gamepad compared to a keyboard and mouse.
The great thing for this old fart is that after some use I now prefer the Xbox 360 controllers and I think I can play better with it than with a keyboard and mouse.

I just can see me ever spending in excess of 200 quid for a graphics card again.

I've installed Call of Duty 2 twice and uninstalled a couple of days after from the multiplayer hitboxes being so bad.. It really is so unrealistic. 1st time i had it on my pc for about 10 months then i uninstalled and it was around end of 2006 i thought i'd give it another go and within 3 days i uninstalled.

I moved back to United Offensive yesterday and it's so much better. I love it mainly because of the huge maps like Rhinevalley which is my favourite sneaking down over the hill and into the houses and bashing the crap out of everyone! 4 bashes in a row yesterday!

I'd say go United Offensive unless theres another game with humougous maps that i haven't heard about? And also one that my X800XT can run... hehe...

Don't know whether to upgrade now or wait till SP1 comes out in June for Vista and buy all new PC and OS then :S
