really annoying fault..

So i've just in the last few days discovered the joys of half-life 2, truely awesome game

The only slight problem is that it wont work! Was fine yesterday, but today when I double click the icon, the sand-timer comes up for a seconds and....nothing happens!! i've made no alterations since yesterday, and BF2 works fine...Any suggestions?

My system is (not that i think it makes any difference)

q6600 oc'd to 3.4
asus p5n-d
4 x 1gb corsair something ram
8800 gtx
and er some hdds, dvd and 650watt psu (goodish make tho i cant remember it)

Any help would be gratefully recieved as i want to get back to some mindless killing

See if there's an error log in it's folder.

Also, just an idea, from Linux, no IDEA if it works in windows......run it from a dos box, to see if it spits any error output into the console. As I say though, I've never tried that, but it's something that works great in other OS's.

Also, if it's Steam, get Steam to verify the files.

(sorry, can'y edit in Opera, the text box comes up as infinitely narrow)

The only log I can see is a connection log for steam. As for windows logs..there is an error, saying

'The machine default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{(loads of numbers)}
to user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using Component Services administative tool.'

The event ID is 10016, i'll try and google it and see what happens.

Any ideas where the Component Services admin tool is? Windows xp64.

Are you sure that event relates to HL2? (Run HL2 and see if it generates a new event).

Are you logged on as an administrator?

Could really use some more info on that event - a source would be nice (listed in the event details box near the top).

Thanks for the help guys, im at work atm, so will take a look tonight. Im fairly sure its an error linked to hl2, but will check..It is steam, but I cant get steam to open either! Rather annoying..does anyone know where the game save files are? am considering a re-install..

Oh, and i did google 10016, microsoft tells me to look up a reg file in regedit, but i cant find it there...

Ok yeah, turns out the 10016 thing is unrelated..anyone got any idea? Think i'll just re-install it

Any idea where the save files are? Although im not too far through the game, so i spose it doesnt matter.
