hi,
for the last couple of weeks my internet has been appauling.
download speeds are tollerable (5-6Mbps), however my ping, and moreso, jitter are completely unacceptable. ping is typically 200-350 ms, and jitter is usually around 100ms

As most of you will probably appreciate gaming online with that sort of connection is unenjoyable, unplayable and massively frustrating, even when I can rarely connect. I think I'm going insane from lack of BF:BC2 :p (havent been able to play a full game in over 2 weeks)

we can't jump ship till october (fixed term contract(orange)), so is there anything else you guys can suggest that may help me get back in the game?
Not expecting much here, as I realise that the main factor is the crummy phone lines in my road, but if anyone could suggest for example some small tweaks/optimisations, or even how to best go about approaching my ISP so that they might at least attempt to help, I would be most grateful
Thanks, Trojan

Very unusual for poor quality line to cause latency issues like that - its usually a sign of either exchange or ISP contention kicking in - but you'd see it being much worse at peak times i.e. 3pm through to midnight - but a lot better outside of those times or more like someones got something running locally i.e. torrents, streaming video, etc.

Theres probably nor much you can do. I would ensure everything is working locally. Ie speed/duplex settings, pinging your local gateway etc.

Could be the phone wiring in your house

  • Is the modem/router plugged into the master socket?
  • Are you using any plug in phone extensions anywhere in your house as these can cause interference?
  • Have you connected any new devices to your phone system recently (new phones, set top boxes .etc)

You could also look into fitting an iPlate, I haven't tried one myself (Master socket is too old) but I have heard good things about it.

Sounds like congestion. Are you using WiFi?

Use thinkbroadband.com's broadband quality monitor to get an idea of average latency.

wow guys thanks for all the suggestions!
Rroff: I've tried at all times of day, doesnt seem to be any better at night.
Nate: link settings are 100Mbps, which is the max my router allows I think.
Cameron: it was always bad, but massively worse since my brother (and his Mac) came home from uni.
fluff and roderz: I am using homeplugs, but my dads PC has a direct ethernet cable to our router and gets similar issues

Fluff: I couldnt find the quality test, only the java based speed test, if anyone could give me a direct link to the quality test I would be grateful!

Thanks again guys for your help/time, but due to my dads unwillingness to do anything short of waiting for our contract to expire, I think I'm at a dead end.

just ran pingtest with my android as a tethered modem, and got much better jitter, and slightly better ping, however I couldnt test this in game, as it won't connect to EA online (guessing ports blocked)

You need to make an account at thinkbroadband and add your WAN IP to the BQM. You will need to allow incoming ICMP/pings on the router.

turn your brothers mac off and test again?

yeah just unplugged him and ping was 30ms, jitter 1-2ms, packet loss 0%
plugged him back in and 150ms, 100ms, 15%

asked him if he had any antivirus on it, and he replies casually
"no, its a mac, they don't get virus' " /endsaga

thanks for the advice guys, hopefully now I can recover some K/D :D
