Can i make it so that when someone wants to go to my intranet, they type its name rather than the ip address or the name of the computer it sits on?

yes, put an entry in all the hosts file.
%WINROOT%/system32/drivers from memory
or make sure your DNS server knows how to resolve the address to the correct ipaddress
