Really high temps ?

hi folks, hoping someone can help me.

I was thinking about running on OC on my system, but thought I'd benchmark it etc first - and came across quite a surprising result.

Firstly, I'm seeing two different temperatures for my CPU - CPU and Core #0-4 - and they have a large difference.
CPU is being reported under the Motherboards branch "ASUSTeK Computer INC. M4A88T-V EVO/USB3"
CORE #01-4 is being reported under the Processor Branch "AMD Phenom II X4 840"

Idle, CPU is 32C, but the Cores are 47C. When running Prime, they hit 61C and 77C.

From what I've been reading, 77C is really high for this CPU - bear in mind there is zero OC running on the system.

(I've checked the temps with Speedfan, CoreTemp and HWMonitor, all give the same readings).

I've cleaned off the TIM and replaced with AS5, which has made no difference. I've got one input fan at the front of the case, and one blowing out at the back.
Mainboard temp is currently at 37C, "Assembly" is 30C - these don't seem to change when Prime is running
(and just for good measure, the GPU is idling at 48C)

Can anyone clear up what is going on?
TIA

Chances are that with your existing case and cooling you will not get much of an overclock.

BUT check the CPU voltage in the bios. It may be overly high if set to auto. CPU-Z should tell you the voltage in windows or just use HWMinotor as you have been doing.

1.35V at stock should be more than enough.

prime will cause more heat than would normally be encountered running programs or games.

Thanks nkata - appreciate the reply.

CPU-Z Says its running at 1.380V. Is that too high? (Its not set as Auto in the bios, its at default.)

I've noticed some games cause "a" fan to go into overdrive (same as running Prime for a few minutes). Although when I was monitoring the CPU fan speed, it didn't seem to be changing all that much when the huge noise was being heard. Could it be the PSU fan?
(the PSU has an intake on the inside of the case and blows out the back)

Its a full size tower with a 120mm fan at the lower-front and another at the upper rear - with 2 side vents -one for GPU one for CPU - actually, this has a tube that is supposed to "cone" towards the CPU, are these useful or should I take it out?

Is this running on the stock cooler? If so a cheap upgrade could be an aftermarket cooler which would give an option to OC a bit.

Case and ventilation sound OK, I have a midi tower with two case fans similarly.

Voltage is probably OK at default, some bioses run slightly high voltage when set to auto.

Found a thread elsewhere with an answer direct from AMD:

Dear Gareth,

Correct, as long as you are within the voltage and temperature guidelines you are ok. The temperature that should be monitored is the overall CPU temperature, not the core temp.

My Prime CPU Temps are 57C - so I'm absolutely fine. Turns out I'm running quite high voltage too (by default) 1.4 - so its looking ripe for some OC action now :)
