Really low GPU usage in Minecraft and few other games

Hello all,

When I play Minecraft it stutters like hell and reports 60-70fps although I know its dropping suddenly then going back up to 60-70. It used to play fine with 300+ fps, and yes I know my monitor cannot display that, nor can I see that, but thats not the point. It now runs like crap.

I have also noticed a drop on Battlefield 3, used to be able to run 90+fps on Ultra, now down to 45-55fps. Cards reporting 65-70%

In Minecraft my first card does not go past 20% usage, and obviously the second is not used due to Minecraft being OpenGL based and not SLI supported.

My spec is as follows;

CPU: AMD FX-8350 Piledriver (4.0Ghz but clocked at 4.4Ghz with no difference to result)
MoBo: Asrock Fatal1ty 990fx
GPU: GTX 560ti 2Gb's in SLI (One is an ASUS Card, the other a POV, both with matched clocks)
RAM: Patriot Viper 8Gb 1600Mhz (XMP Profile, 2x4GB)
PSU: Xigmatech Centuro 800w
CPU Cooler: Corsair H80 P/P
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1Tb for OS + Programs. Other mixed HDD's for other purposes.

Latest BETA Drivers, though I have tested previous drivers.

Temps;

CPU: 59'c on Prime95 for 4 hours @4.4Ghz
GPU: 80'c + 82'c on Furmark 4 hours

Any ideas?

Install Optifine, it's probably the best mod for Minecraft. Allows you to tweak settings and make's the game so much more smoother.

Minecraft runs terrible without it regardless of the hardware.

Have you also tried just one of the cards and removed the other?

Optifine gets me the 60-70fps, sorry should have mentioned that. its normally 45fps.

Going up to maximum "standard" game settings or minimum settings makes no difference oddly.

I have Windows 8 so I have task manager open on Performance Tab and nothing is hitting 100% Usage either.

In all honesty, Nvidia cards never play well with Minecraft, my GF's 560ti card used to mess up all the time, not sure what the issue were but it never played smoothly. I have a 965 BE @ 3.4 with a AMD 6950 2GB and things run smooth!

Try disabling SLI and see how things run?

Already tried. Running 2 1920*1080 Monitors though gaming on one. I have tried having one card running both monitors, either card running one each.

I have tried each card individually in every PCIe x16 Slot too! With clean driver installs also.

you've got a mucked up setting somewhere, i have to throttle it down from around 300fps to 60 on a gtx570. You didn't say if it was multiplayer or not, in which case you're at the mercy of the server.

Single player and Multiplayer :)

I have uninstalled Java, GPU Drivers, Minecraft and Removed everything from AppData relating to Minecraft/Java/nVidia. Then run CCleaner + Driver Sweeper. I have swapped/removed both cards. Tried single/dual/triple monitors.

I also had this problem before the FX-8350, when I was still running a FX-4170.

I have tried everything without overclocks, with overclocks, low ram settings, XMP Profile, defragged HDD, fresh Minecraft install, BETA Drivers + Normal Drivers, ran Memtest without problems, checked stability via Prime95, IBT, Furmark, MSI Kombuster all for 4+ Hours with no problems, forced card to run 3D Clock constantly.

Nothing I have done has had any impact except overclocking the card. 850Mhz I get 40Fps on Vanilla Minecraft with stutter. At 925MhzI get 46Fps with stutters also.

Also, on Battlefield 3 I get 55Fps on average but I should be getting 90+ Fps on Ultra @1920*1080 with 2 GTX560ti 2GBs @900Mhz which I think is linked to the Minecraft problem.

As soon as my GF's PC is up and running when I have money I will reinstall OS as I cant currently as it will mess with her iTunes which takes her 10+ hours to fix... :sigh:

Good luck! I know my GF would kill me if I deleted all her music! :p

Her iTunes has its own HDD, a 160Gb out of her old laptop, so not problems there :)

Its just a matter of her going on to sort out all playlists resync and such. iTunes is the devils work. Since it updated 4 Months ago, its sizing never fits any monitor if running Windows, silly Apple.

Ah great that it's fixed. A simple refresh can solve so many problems. I might give my own PC a refresh soon, just annoying with steam saves that don't sync!

Backup everything related to Steam to an external HDD. This includes everything in .appdata steam related.

Then do the refresh, reinstall Steam, replace the install files for the ones from old install, replace .appdata Steam stuff and open Steam and you should be good to go. The only thing that might be a bit funny with this process is CD keys as quite a few save them in the registry, you will just have to simply re-enter them from Steam :)
