Hi guys

Best way to sort a really messy music library out ?

Back it all up and go through manually, album by album, track by track, basically do a fresh start is what im thinking of lately.

Or is there a more logical method to sorting it all out, having album artwork, correct tracknames etc etc etc.

Any tips on if i ever do sort it all out how to manage new stuff i add, so i can keep it organised and start using the rating features and having a so called organised library. I just seem to have allsorts of music in allsorts of players ie itunes, windows media player etc etc.

Cheers for the guidance :)

Could you just whack it all in itunes and then use the organise library feature (puts it all on one place under artist>album>song iirc)

The problem I have with this is compliation albums or mix CD's. It puts music from an album under all the different artists rather than under the album title making it completely useless.

I recently started going through mine, doing it manually and with a program like MP3tag (i think), time consuming but worth it in long run though i'm only down to 'F'

You can select all the songs in an album then goto "Get Info" and on one of the tabs there is an option to select "Compilation = Yes/No" make it Yes then it will group them all the songs from the album together in one folder.

If iTunes doesn't do what you want take a look at MediaMonkey, it's what I use for my media centre and has sorted out all my music with album art really well

Clear out itunes library and move the physical files to a temporary location.

Download musicbrainz picard from : http://musicbrainz.org/

Install the cover art and itunes auto import plugin

Go through and use it to auto tag your music, correcting any mistakes as it goes.

Done. Music Library Organisational happiness thereafter.

Top man, I will reinvestigate this now then as I really didn't try too hard before!

In the sorting tab make sure they are set to the main artist, too. That way if you have a metadata entry such as "Rihanna ft. Eminem" but the sorting artist is just Rihanna, they will all be grouped under the one "Rihanna" artist, rather than creating a "Rihanna ft. Eminem" artist, with the same album name.
