Right sold my phone over ebay a couple weeks back, but it turned out to be a nigerian scammer. I relisted it and it ended today, winning bid was a really good price, higher than the previous. Id barred foreign users etc so thought I'd be okay. Then I read the email and, once again, this person was buying on behalf of their nigerian brother. I've got a feeling this person has had their account hacked since the surname is definitely not a nigerian name (same as a famous lancastrian cricketer actually) and the person has 25 feedback, all positive. It's getting to be a real pain atm, might just do the second chance offer instead of faffing about trying to get the fees back etc.

What do you think I should do, jsut go straight to the second highest bidder or wait for a couple of days and start the unpaid bidder process and then relist?

I've always wondered, what's the deal with Nigeria and eBay? I hear people say about Nigerian scammers but is it really specific to Nigeria?

Not doubting anyone, I just genuinely would like to know.

Well, most government officials in Nigeria are corrupt too.

Most contries have refused to do trade with Nigerian companies due to this reason.

The corruption there is everywhere.

Most scammers aren't from Nigeria though. We just assume that, based on the fact that some of the first (I believe) large scams were from Nigerians.

If the next person below the highest bidder meets your requirements say is UK based then i would do this.

Although if this person turns out to be the same are you then able to second chance offer it again ?

Quick update: the original bidder has put the money into my paypal account along with £30 to cover the postage to Nigeria. Now I'm guessing that this money will be charged back soon even if I were to send him the phone. As my auction clearly stated I would only send to UK addresses, I'm guessing I am perfectly within my rights to refuse to send the item to this bidder, but how do i go about returning the money to him or should I just wait for the guy to take the money back himself?

Just send the money back to him, send him an email explaining your actions, and block him.

Check out bidding history of any bidders for your auctions - it often helps.

Right the email appears to be a scam as well seen as it is saying it will confirm payment once the shipping is confirmed etc. There is no paypal logo in the email either and it's using a paypal usa reference and the address [email protected]. Grr blooming scammers, really do have to look at stuff carefully :p

edit: actually it may be a legit email, i hadnt got gmail to load the logos :p

Not going to any links in it though just in case, I didnt think people could put restrictions on payments like that with paypal?

tell him you're not posting until he's paid by paypal. no other method.

if he refuses, tell him to stuff it, and you're relisting. state clearly in your auction that ALL FOREIGN BIDDERS MUST USE PAYPAL, AND THE ITEM WILL NOT BE DISPATCHED PRIOR TO PAYMENT BEING RECEIVED.

don't delete all foreign buyers just because you're getting raw deals from some. if they pay and it clears, you've got nothing to worry about.

Just to be on the safe side, check your Paypal account. Obviously not using the links supplied by the potential scammer. ;)

That email is blatently a fake, @usa.com?

Yeah I know, but by actually putting the logos and FSA stuff in at the bottom etc, it could easily have fooled some people :( Just checked my paypal and lo and behold nothing, emailed the guy saying i wont sell it to him due to the auction stating UK address only and now hoping the second chance guy wants it.
