This is not so much a problem any more as I did work around it, but it annoyed the crap out of me for days trying to fix and wondered if anyone else had the same problem?
Last week I reformatted my machine as I upgraded my motherboard/ram/cpu and the first game I installed was BF2 and the 1.4 patch. Game loaded fine to the menus but any time I tried to join a game or start a singleplayer game it would stop loading at 59% and drop straight back to the desktop. I tried changing video/sound options etc but nothing worked.
I then uninstalled BF2, re-downloaded a new 1.4 patch from a different mirror (just incase I had a corrupt download) and reinstalled both again. Same problem
Next, I uninstalled/reinstalled JUST BF2 (no patch). Worked fine. Patched and it crashed to desktop again.....
I reformatted the computer, installed/uninstalled/reinstalled BF2 and various newly downloaded patches numerous times, crash to desktop........
and on and on and on until I installed BF2 (tested, worked). Installed 1.3 patch (tested, worked) and finally installed the 1.3-1.4 update patch and it works fine?!!
I've googled for the problem but have not spotted anything similar! The only related thing was regarding installing to a non-standard directory, but I install to the predefined directory!
