im at a complete loss as to whats causing this

ive tryed a complete re-format

with Catalyst 6.1 Drivers.

Im using an X800 XT PE and intermintently games will lock up on me. Atm im playing BF2 and NFS : Most wanted and its locking in both.

I have ventrillo running in the background, and the game will freeze, but for about 2/3 seconds vent will still carry on. Then the sound will repeat itself

then the screen goes black, then i just static and crackling noise in my headset.

Only way out is to reboot.

Its only recently started doing this, and will sometimes do it really quickly, other times not. other times after a long time.

Ive tryed the heat issue, Catalyst reads 58 straight after i reboot, obviously cant get a temp when it crashes ...

ive tryed the 6.2 Drivers and that didnt improve anything.

anything else i can try ?

Does it crach with a blue screen or something then restarts? or crash to desktop? or crash to just the first screen when u start ** pc up?
Have you overclocked you card? it might have been a stable overclock in the past but just stick it all back to stock including volts and see if it happens, try running the games without vent see if that helps maybe ventrilo or something associated with it is damaged?
If your not showing artifiacts in games I doubt its your GPU fault - but I suspect maybe its overheating - try running 3dmark 05/06 with ati tool in the corner - run it a few times or run 3dmark 03, then when it changes to different benchmarks u can check the temp in the right hand corner of your screen as it flashes quickly to desktop.

Sorry I wrote this like a retard but i'm eating :D

game freezes, so whatevers on display at that moment is whats on screen

then monitor turns off due to no signal.

card is standard, never been OCed. And i dont run vent in the background while playing NFS, just noticed its exactly the same crash. and deffo no artifacts, Its all fine then just nothing.

oh and CPU temp never leaves the 40s.

thinking it must be my soundblaster due to that sound repeating over and over when it crashes.

I had this before and it turned out to be the sound card. I had a faulty Soundblaster live! If you have a soundcard, remove it and use onboard sound. If the onboard sound is faulty then buy or borrow a card to try.

its not a psu, its over-rated for what ive got and its less than a year old. Its an Antec Tru Power 480w

and whats more, it only hangs in games. pure CPU load like DVD Encoding doesnt result in a crash at all. Its got to be either graphics or sound. after what people here have said to expect of a graphics crash, im inclined to belive its the sound

this would fit with the timescale of me changing sound drivers from the ones that came on the disk too.

Ill run driver cleaner and revert back to the drivers on the CD and see if that helps.

I have the same problem if I overclock my X1900XT, screen locks then PC does.

Try underclocking by 100mhz on mem and GPU?

I had exactly the same thing mate, windows would run and run, encoding dvd's was fine. Put a game on and it would randomly crash with the exact same thing you are having. I had a 480W tagen (turned out to be borked). Like i said it was a PSU issue.

Im not saying thats your problem, all im saying is dont rule it out becuase you "think" it cant be the cause.

I have a similar problem, but it affects Windows and also causes artifacting. Sometimes it happens at stock, but overclocking even 5% increases the chances tenfold of the screen going black, continually switching back and forth from standby mode.

have seen this problem many times.
your machine works fine in windows and whilst wtching films.
but as soon as you start a 3D ap like a game it goes.

it will either be your graphics card or RAM.

Hop into the BIOS & set the SMP table version to 1.1 as opposed to 1.4- Exact same problem (Down to the games involved :D ) & this fixed it nicely.
All I know is that its a BIOS problem somewhere- The initial BIOS release fixes it without anything for me, but I need the later revision to run Linux properly :(

Format didn't fix this for me either.

Hope this helps
