Really slow Ethernet speed?

Right so my first build went reasonably well considering I’ve not even used a PC since school.

The only problem I’m having so far is my ethernet speed and it’s driving me nuts! It was fine on my PS4 but I’m getting a maximum of about 2.8Mbps down rate.

I’m a telecoms engineer by trade so I’ve obviously checked my phone/broadband line and that’s absolutely fine, and I’m getting 35Mbps at the socket (max speed for my area). I THINK I’ve installed all the relevant drivers, but like I said I’m very new to this so could have ****** that up, although it seemed fairly straightforward.

any suggestions?

p.s if there’s a better place for this thread feel free to point me in the right direction.
 
If you try a 'live' Linux boot cd and do a similar speed test you will isolate OS vs hardware.

I used to use Knoppix and I think Mint has a live version. If it's on board then make sure you have the latest drivers installed from the motherboard vendor rather than from MS.
 
at a guess have you got one or two ethernet ports on your mobo, i had a similar issue and it turned out i was a bit dumb and plugged into my 10g onboard instead of the 1g nic, as soon as i switched over vouloir my internet speed jumped back up to normal.

what mobo do you have? i can take a look and find the correct drivers if you like :), could be chipset related too, not having up to date drives will case weird problems too, more akin to bsod rather than sluggish performance

Just the one Ethernet port. Ahh that would be amazing if you could mate. I’m pretty useless with this stuff haha. I’ve got the MSI B450 pro carbon ac. Cheers mate :D
 
what windows version have you got, 7, 10?

there is a diffrent lan driver for each, could be wrong one installed, chipset drives are diffrent also
 
Have you checked the link speed of the LAN connection? Make sure it's connected at 1Gbps and not 100Mb or something.

Also have you tried another patch cable?

Also, where is the speed being measured? As if it's a file download is usually measured in megabyte/s and the ISP speed is done in megabit/s. So a download speed of 2.8MB/s is 22.4Mbps.
 
if you are running windows 10 you'll need the follwing drivers (64bit may work with 32bit if you have that version)

chipset driver version 19.10.28
intel network driver version 24.0.0.11

if you are running windows 7 (64bit) you'll need the following drivers

chipset driver version 17.40.2815.1010
intel netwrok driver version 24.0.0.0


if you are running windows 7 (32bit) you'll need the following driver

intel network driver version 24.0.0.0

hope this helps, best to uninstall the network and chipset driver and start again, i'd go chipset first then the network driver last

Apparently My intel network driver is 12.18.8.22. I’ve tried the update driver tab where it searches for newer versions but it tells me I’ve got the best available? Oh and I’m on Windows 10.
 
Just looked and I’ve downloaded the newest version but I must’ve installed it wrong or not at all. Is there a setup file like most other drivers because I can’t find it?

find the support tab, scroll down a bit and find driver, select Win10 64, here you'll have the links to downlaod the driver(s) manually, once downloaded look in you download folder in windows and you should see the installer, go ahead and open it to install the driver
 
Tbh you should not need to download drivers, W10 is very good at that job. The fact that it works at all means a driver is installed and working.

which version of 10 are you on? for reference the latest build is winows 10 version 1909, if your lan driver is version 12.18.8.22 then i'd say update it as that kinda seems old

Yeah I've downloaded that twice now and its still saying version 12.18.8.22? Gotta be doing something wrong.

thats really odd, i've just downlaoded the network driver and its named "Intel_Network_300" opeing it up and in the folder its called " intel-24.0.0.11" going into this file has all the files needed to install the network driver, complety flumexed as to why your seeing 12.18.8.22, are you sure you have the msi b450 pro carbon ac board?

the downloaded zip folder should be 217mb in size for the pro carbon ac mobo

The download states it’s 24.0.0.11 but when I install it it’s still showing the older version. When I open the folder it has a load of sub folders and non of them are 217mb?

when the file is downloaded it will be a zip file, once unziped the file will be 335mb total size and have 840 files anmd 114 folders within, it should be as simple as double clicking the auto run. Did you uninstall the old verion first or just install over the top?.

which version of windows 10 have you got installed, as i mentioned earlier the most recent build is v1909
