multiple things are really slow on my computer.
1). when i run 3ds max 2012, it's pretty slow, the model jerks a little when you pan around the viewport etc...
2). when 3ds max is running, windows aero is incredibly slow (especially minimising and maximising applications from the taskbar)
3). the mouse on the screen sometimes has trouble keeping up, and tends to stick in a place for a few seconds, and then jerk around the screen.
4). i get random BSODs every now and then. today it was when i started up windows, but it does it when i play games as well.

Specs:
> nvidia geforce 8800gtx
> core 2 quad Q6600 @ 3.0ghz
> 8GB RAM (3ds max only needs 4GB to run @ optimum settings)
> 500GB HDD space

So is my 5 year old graphics card finally on the way out?

Sounds to me more like the HDD is having a hard time, it sticking in the same place for a few seconds at a time and stuttering sounds like its having trouble seeking.

Grab an SSD while they're cheap?

a little reluctant due to the fact that i installed windows from a friend's disk, which he then took back, so reinstalling windows onto the ssd may be a bit of a hassle.

the other thing is that after i close 3ds max, everything's fine again. it's only when i open anyhting that's graphics-intensive, that the mouse starts to stick

Have you monitored CPU and memory usage while this is happening? I'd imagine 3ds MAX to be very Thread/memory happy.

RAM usage is at about 2.38GB all the way up to 3.19 (maximum) when rendering highest quality, and CPU usage jumps between 0-1% to around 30% tops.
