Really slow Steam downloads

Steam not loading / slow downloads

Whenever I'm updating or downloading something on Steam I get incredibly low download rates, we're talking 0-10 KB/s here

I've checked and everything else I download is at a resonable speed (including other US downloads). I have a 4MB connection that I've done a speed test on, that seems fine. I have set my connection speed in steam to the 2MB option & 10MB option just to check.

On another note Steam takes an absolute age to load up. It's not like I have a slow PC (E8400 3.0GHz, 2GB RAM) and everything else loads fast...

I too have noticed that Steam always takes a while to load. Between my crummy P3 PC at work and my home gaming beast there are no difference in speeds. Regarding downloads I get really slow speeds when downloading demos and games, but downloading videos/trailers it's really fast.

Strange. My Steam downloads are usually around 50% of my bandwidth so 130 kB/s compared to max 280 kB/s. During non-peak times they go up to 260 kB/s

Mine are generally around 100-110kb/s anytime of the day, i am on a uni accommodation network though.

Close steam, delete clientregistry.blob, reload steam.

Should log you onto the fastest content server it can find at the time.

i normally get around 1.3 to 1.5mb sec downloading steam games on Virgin XL in Newcastle

Are you using the latest Steam Client ? In a recent update they basically made downloading REALLY speedy, i always hit my max download speed now (before it was a complete random mess). Check it by going to File > Check for Steam updates.

Are you trying to browse at the same time, I think mine dips when I do that.

No thats with 1 thing downloading and everything turned off in the background.

Ogs, I do have the latest steam client installed.
I have yet to delete the clientregistry.blob and reload steam but the main problem now is that Steam itself takes 15-20 mins to load. What the hell is with that!?! This is with everything off in the background, full defrag, E8400 3.0GHz, 2GB RAM. Would I be best just to re-install Steam?

delete the clientregistry.blob

I deleted the clientregistry.blob and it just gets stuck at:

It sometimes loads up a bit but never completes the update

Re-install?

Ok, So I restored the clientregistry.blob and for a few days Steam loaded fine, downloaded speeds were back to normal. But after a defrag Steam hasn't been able to load :confused:
